WASHINGTON, Jan 30: The United States has selected a spot in Baghdad's top security Green zone and will spend more than $1.5 billion to build a new, fortress like embassy in the Iraqi capital, the State Department said.

The present embassy is located in temporary facilities and was not intended for a long-term use. The $1.5 billion will come out of the $80 billion supplemental budget that President Bush sought for Iraq last week.

It is unclear when the new complex will be ready. The US embassy in Iraq is the most expensive of the more than 250 missions Washington maintains abroad. In addition to the main headquarters in Baghdad, the US will also build four regional offices, or consulates, in various cities around Iraq.

The role of the US embassy is unique because of the presence of about 138,000 American soldiers in Iraq. In other countries, the embassy does not have to deal with American troops.

There are no Teamsters, Mafia or US priced materials......how the HELL can the cost be in the BILLIONS!?!?!? Or more accurately, if you're talking that sort of troop count & facility size, why not just call it a MILITARY BASE for the on going OCCUPATION and be done with it!?

We're moving in! :shk:

I had a momentary sliver of hope we'd be done with this mess once the conserva-pundits had their sorely sought "success" of a haphazard, mostly anonymous, general "election" of an assembly to select a committee to install a President.

Guess not.

Audit: $9 Billion Unaccounted for in Iraq

The U.S. occupation authority in Iraq was unable to keep track of nearly $9 billion it transferred to government ministries, which lacked financial controls, security, communications and adequate staff, an inspector general has found. When staff members of the U.S. occupation government recommended that payrolls be verified before salary payments, CPA financial officials "stated the CPA would rather overpay salaries than risk not paying employees and inciting violence," the inspector general said.

Funny, contractors are swimming in the money & are consistently thrown billion dollara contracts as a bove, yet they can't find a way to properly armor the troops or equipment!?
Maybe Haliburton should open a body armor division, and then something would get done.
