We may now be sleepwalking our way towards a world war, according to a highly respected economic historian.

Harold James of Princeton University says the election of Donald Trump and the result of last year's EU referendum suggest the world's appetite for globalisation is collapsing - something that often prefigures more conflict.

In an interview with Sky News, Prof James said that countries had become locked in an information arms race similar to one that began in the years preceding World War One.

Sky news

Not saying a believe this one way or another only that I think this makes for a interesting discussion topic. I do think that there could be a strong argument made for claiming that brexit and trump makes the world less secure but I am interested in hearing what everyone else thinks of this.

When Historians start warning us of where current events could be leading, let's see which leaders actually listened in school.

It appears they are determined to keep following the same path on a cyclical basis.

I am not one for doomporn but with volatile leaders emerging, the world economy on a clif, global warming, the spread of terrorism and a ever increasing demand in global resources I think we are heading to only one inevitable conclusion. WW3

An information arms race similar to the one before WWI?
Does this historian have a top secret security clearance that makes him privy to such information?
Doubtful...

More Ivory tower preachers telling us poor ignorant fools what to think.

You ask me the doomsday clock is rolled back every time globalism takes a hit like this.

I think professor Harold James is amazing, he has his finger on the pulse of stating the bloody obvious and claiming independent thought better than anyone else I have seen in the past.

Must be 100s of threads about this already but
Harold James said so, must be right then, it's only because of Brexit and Trump but, nothing that happened before that, nothing that happened last year before Trump and Brexit

Harold James is beggining the brain washing, before Trump, Brexit, everything was good, everything was peaceful.
Now Brexit and Trump =WW3 will happen

Princeton Professor, sems like nothing special

There is something about Trumps style, but don't expect to read about it in contemporary main stream media sources.

The Praetorian gate should either front the east or the enemy

The warmongers think they know exactly what they are doing. Those aren't tanks and missiles piling up in Eastern Europe, by accident.

Problem is people think they can pressure a country into submission, by threatening war without actually starting one.

Or they think they can play the war-game, just a little bit.

Then heres those that plan for war while talking peace.

All three are playing right now.

Who needs Doomporn when you have reality?

Humanity has constantly shown us / ourselves that we're half walking forward and half slitting our own wrists.

I don't understand how we even have polarity of opinion when we're just choosing to ignore the other half of each equation.

What do you get when you have 7 billion people who don't listen to one another? You get our world.

What would solve much of our issues, listening to one another's issues and addressing them in a rational and logical fashion.

Why hasn't the above happened yet after how many years?

Because it's not profitable to have equality and progress, you get to stick your hand in the cookie jar more when there is a fire in the living room.

And stop telling us to wake up, we're all awake, accept those we elect into office, they have an incentive to stay asleep.

Its funny you call them volatile, I say they are using common sense and saying what most of the citizens are thinking.

Well the hardworking contributing citizens anyway, Theres going to be an anti trump rally in Melbourne Australia tomorrow, I saw 3 tables set up around the city today with information and people trying to recruit participants.
Not one of the people at the tables was over 20, I guess its easy to be idealistic and hide from reality when youve had basically zero life experience and all your opinions come from those looking to exploit you as a useful idiot

I'd like to question if this so called professor was far right. What people believe can shift what we perceive as reality. It matters.

Harold James is not the one pushing protectionism which leads to trade wars. The emperor of the USA is pushing for protectionism however. trade wars did predate the two world wars!
