The Great Auk

The Great Auk, was no hawk
No parrot and ostrich.
No peacock was that bird
With golden colored feathers.

His feathers did not dazzle with
Azure and purple pastels.

Just a bird that surfaced
From icy Western waters
Like a diver from the cold.

He'd never need a fireplace,
Or ever want to linger,
Into the dreary depths he goes,
Or else he'd bite your finger.

A cute darling Puffin,
as sweet looking as
a muffin...
likes to be at sea,
but sometimes
comes ashore
for a glimpse
from you
or me!

There once was an Auk in Nantucket
When going extinct he said


Never mind

A dodo does as a dodo wills.
It has no worries but to
dodo on.

It eats and breeds
it waddles along
without a care in the world.

Along came a stranger
with a hunger in his eyes.
Those eyes came to look at me.

The strangers hunger is gone
and so am I.
I no longer dodo on.

Dignified bird, black and white
All but devoid of flight

In the Northern sea
Did we last see thee

Lived your last day
On the isle of Eldey

It's really very sad,
But what makes me feel quite sanguine,
Is every teacher who should cane himself
When he says there's no nothern penguin.

The Neanderthal...

Ode to the species Neanderthal,
Who roamed the Earth before our kind,
They followed the rules of natural law,
Giving way to the next species in line.

Survived the ice age and the thaw,
I'm sure some meteors as well,
Managed to live, through it all,
They roamed the Earth for quite a spell.

Then they discovered how to make,
The wheel and also beer and fire,
Learned how to cook a perfect steak,
They had everything a man desires.

And in a drunken state of glee,
They went out hunting on the plain,
They all got killed accidentally,
And that is where their bones remain.

Oh dear that does sound dreadful, I bet a lost tribe in isolation
And Homo Sapiens gave them alcohol
And they passed out, in a mammoth herd's migration.

There one was a fish
It lived in a dish
it died
the end.

I miss swishy...

A puffin-loving dust covered banshee
Sat up on her rock puffin lovin
And begged and shook fists at the stupified mists saying why can't you just be a puffin
And she and the snails that just cling to the docks write letters of air doin nuffin'.

And along came the only modern human being wondering why they pretend to have feathers


And then he remarked how pointless it was to spend hours trading air filled swamp letters.

You better be doing that a lot, because those, imo, words are the things that grab people.

and are remembered. intelligent, if quirky and yet ubiquitous, poetry is a gift, my friend.

You see not all fish, live in a dish
And neither do they swim about,

And some mermaids are real,
Wheresoever you see a sprout.
Maybe that's not true - old seamen talk a lot.
But your fish-tail
that you're splashing about
that's really what I'm talking about.

But anyway, there's fish OK
Who once lived in rivers and dams.

And you government said, if a species dies:
Well #, who gives a damn.

That was Khmer Rouge for fishes,
That was Bam, bam bam!

The Megatherium (Ground Sloth):

You, ate and ate, and ate:
Only Hercules could make you
thin as a plate.

Although, you're terraforming
To be a hippy sloth hardly takes transforming.

That was the downfall of the sloth,
It couldn't sell you magic cloth.

A 4 ton ground-sloth.
Perhaps hard to keep.
Hey if they brought it back,
Amongst the sheep ...

Once there were elephants in the Americas.

At least we got the TRUMP right.
