I see long time members with low stats and new arrivals
with stats to envy ( if you do choose 😊 ) .

Should time of membership tenure and contributions be factored in ??

... I feel some flack may have been attracted.

Since the date of membership is clearly visible (if the member has not chosen an awkward avatar), then it's easy enough for someone glancing at the stats to do their own "factoring in".
I think people do, if only unconsciously. "You've been here ten years and you've only made five posts?"
The "karma" figure in the stats obviously has "divide by the number of posts" somewhere in the formula, which has a similar effect.
The main profile also shows "average flags per thread" and "average stars per post", if you really want to make comparisons.
For example, it's obvious at a glance that your ratio of stars to posts is much higher than mine, which helps to explain why your karma of 56 is greater than my meagre 23.

Nice take on it !

Karma seems to me to be the best inicator of merit.

A thread can be gangstalked .

I was wondering if time spent earning appreciation from members and mods alike

Hmmm is applause factored ?

So many questions !

I think I've seen that applauses are included in the Karma calculation, but not in the WATS.

Why are you worried about status or flags and stars?
That is not what this is all about. That is what Facebook is about, but not ATS.

ATS is about discussing things, expanding our minds, and finding the truth about many subjects.

Your life is not measured in how many stars you earn. Unfortunately people are groomed to think it matters starting in kindergarten, when you earn stars for accomplishments, and later when children are given trophies for just being there. Giving people some kind of award for just being on a forum is just like the trophy. What does it really prove or matter?

Don't live your life for the stars. Live your life to live.

It is a comlex calc. I also read once yhat it was factored in to the equation.

I don't however remember seeing a lenghth of membership being part of the math.

( let's face it ... some do not even see twelve months ! )

I don't.

I was looking to drum up some discussion ... !

Could be fun ... could be controversial.

Don't take it to heart lest you feel you need to vent.

If so ... I'll listen to you . 😊

Why do stars and flags matter? Mine are both terrible given my number of posts.

Here's the thing, neither really reflect post quality. The best way to get either is to rile people up and make sarcastic comments about one political side or the other. From what I've seen, the same holds true for applause.

People with lots of stars are more often in a circle jerk group than a good poster. Many of their stars coming from the exact same people consistently. Their redundant comments actually read between the lines 'star me pls' "I blah blah blah!" : *nods* "I blah, blah too, u know blah blah[exact same redundant comment as first post](star mei plssss)". The goal here is to get someone to consistently star you, with them assuming you will do the same. Then you build the group up, and wave some wang.

Also people that 'make regular threads' always have inflated stars compared to the reasonable sound minded comments from some individuals. Want 10 stars right now? Make a thread and post three times about literally anything. Make a thread called "Edit not finished yet" and watch as you get stars before you even post anything.

I totally agree

Also story telling and research about your topics of interest will show how one has more skills on certain topics then others .

I think there are three kinds of users here: The thread makers , thread debaters, and both.

When I first joined I think a person had to work much harder to gain stars and flags than they do now.

If I look at some of my old threads there are hardly any stars on the various responses even though some of them were highly hilarious.

I think we lost the ability to give stars in BTS for a while too, but my memory may be a bit hazy on that one.

I took a break from ATS for a couple of years and when I came back the distributing of stars was a lot more generous than it had been.

I think that is at least part of the explamation in respect of the stats.

Maybe people are used to 'liking' stuff on Facebook and the habit carries over?

Or other people are like me nowadays and give people stars just for turning up in their threads.

Indeed input on your thread is worthy of a star just for showing up.

The rest of the membership have the final say ...
