How much influence does a president actually have on what NASA does?

Quite a bit.

It's a government agency like any other.

Trump doesn't know squat about space exploration IMO.

And what did obama really know about it? For crying out loud he was having NASA wasting time and money on "Making muslims feel good about themselves", NASA !?

And now that Trump wants nasa to go back into space and keep busy with actual science all you can come up with is "What does Trump know about space exploration?" You can't get more ridiculous then that. And that is why we have NASA, Because they DO know a lot about space exploration !

Let a space agency get back to what it was created to do.

SPACE.

We're talking about Trump, not JFK.

Who will Trump listen to? If anyone?

Trump seems to think he knows it all.

There wasn't oil on the moon.

But there is a lot of free land for a real estate mogul.

Imagine a Trump low gravity Golf Course on the moon.

Your claim that Trump knows nothing about space exploration also has nothing to do with the fact that he wants NASA to focus on what they are intended for.

Please tell me exactly what NASA is intended for.

And Gorilla habits wouldn't be destroyed.

You say that now...
Just wait till the rock gopher habitat on mars is destroyed and then humanity will be expected to assimilate billions of refugee gophers sailing from Mars on ships cobbled together with NASA's old pathfinder rover parts.
This was an immigration thread right?
I swear all this fake news has me so confused anymore so I just throw crap at the wall...

I know they get funding from government.

But, who actually decides what they work on?

A fair amount, not total control but not nothing either. I actually think Trump will be pretty good for NASA. It's an organization that does well with big grandiose plans and that's the sort of thing Trump thinks about.

I would rather see a Mars mission myself but a good Moon plan that involves concepts like a space base to launch interstellar missions from would make Mars a lot more viable. It's a good chance to build a space elevator from the Moon to such a station as well.

That works too.

Then we could finally put an end to faces and spoons.

I am a huge supporter of space exploration. I think Trump is crazy - - but, I am practical/logical and can compartmentalize the progressive/positive from the negative.

I also think all science should be a global collaboration and understand perfectly drawing the brightest scientific minds from around the globe (including Muslims).

A problem with NASA is its huge budget. Let's forget "the wall" and direct those funds to space exploration.

I am pro-Mars too. But, I think building a livable underground complex on the moon might be the best first step.

I'm fascinated by the Moon Elevator. Could it realistically transport modified cranes & boring machines to the moon - - to begin construction? (probably have to be robotic in the beginning).

I recall some famous words For ALL mankind. To the moon people, and beyond! This country, and the world's focus should be aimed at getting off this rock. So sometime not too far off in the distant future. We take our rightful place among the heavens.

BTW: your article about Obama/Muslims/NASA written by Right Wing: Mona Charen (born 1957) is an American columnist, political analyst and author of two books: Useful Idiots: How Liberals Got it Wrong in the Cold War and Still Blame America First (2003) and Do-Gooders: How Liberals Hurt Those They Claim to Help (and the Rest of Us) (2005), . . en.wikipedia.org...

REBUTTAL: UDPATE: Obama DID NOT "Charge" Bolden To Do Muslim Country Outreach.

White House denies NASA remark on Muslim outreach, AP "The White House is contradicting the NASA administrator's claim that President Barack Obama assigned him to reach out to Muslims on science matters. ... White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Monday that such activities are not among Bolden's assigned tasks. He said administration officials have spoken with NASA about the matter."

White House: No Muslim outreach for NASA, Washington Post

"Despite his sterling credentials as a former astronaut and military man, Bolden has been a bit of a headache for the White House: Some say he was nominated reluctantly for the post only after Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) (Bolden's former space shuttle crewmate) insisted that Obama appoint him. Since then, he cried at his first meeting with agency workers and has upset lawmakers and NASA veterans with the administration's new plans for space exploration."

Muslim Outreach Not the Job of NASA, White House Says, Fox News

"But [White House Press Secretaty] Gibbs on Monday appeared to deny that Bolden was asked to focus on Muslim outreach at all. Asked whether Bolden misspoke, Gibbs said: "I think so." He said he wasn't aware of Obama speaking to Bolden about his comments." nasawatch.com...
