I can sort of understand PETA being opposed to people wearing real animal fur.

I most definitely do not understand them being opposed to wearing synthetic furs.

Will they be throwing fake blood on people that dare to wear fake fur now?

What's next, any other clothing? I mean a cloth shirt keeps us warm just like a fur kept a Native American warm, so it is an approximation... just like fake furs are an approximation of real furs to PETA.

But it is okay for PETA to kill virtually all the animals taken into their shelters.
Screw them.

Hey, PETA...

I guess you just don't like PETA? I'm neutral here and see it as something they would naturally oppose. The idea behind it from their point of view is that kids get conditioned and see wearing animal furs as an ok thing to do. Right?!?

At the ripe old age of 50 I grew up watching the Flintstones... It didn't condition me or anyone I know to go around wearing pelts...

But I must admit that as a kid I loved to scream out YABADABADOOOOOOO from time to time with my mates.

How are they focusing on the latter?? You implied Warhammer 40k was the latter; so, if that is true, then this is ridiculous because there are no characters that are so technologically ignorant that they are reduced to using fur. That would be Warhammer fantasy, which is more likely what they are having an issue with.

WTF Dwarves deserve death and I deserve a cloak rendered from their beards.

PETA GTFO OF MY WARHAMMER

Squats were killed off in 40k back in the 90's (their homeworlds conveniently wiped out by Tyrannids when Games Workshop decided that "dwarves in space" sucked) so you'll have a heck of a job collecting enough material for your cloak!

In 40k there's still a bit of furrery going on. The Space Wolves are depicted wearing fur quite a bit but they were given the Wulfen gene so could be considered part wolf. Also the orks but I mean, they are orks.

I find it odd that they attack the Space Wolves (actually Vlka Fenryka), yet give the Night Lords a pass.

There are many reasons to hate the "fluff" and game of 30k-40k. Galactic fascism, rampant misogyny, The Emperor of Man destroying all religion in the galaxy to become a god, an income inequality that makes today look like a socialist utopia (whole planet press gangs, desperation cannibalism in the lowest levels of society, soylent-green style bio-reclamation in the 90% middle "class", off world delicacies served by slaves in the upper class estates/spires).

A hole is literally torn in "hell" to allow FTL travel. Genetically modified super soldiers spit acid, have two hearts, three lungs, eat the flesh of their enemies to gain memories, carry atomic grenades, and kill entire planets for the crime of "seeing" the wrong thing (Exterminatus). Did I mention the soldiers must be recruited before puberty, but only after they have proven their ability to kill.

40k is every bad trait of human government multiplied by 1000 and set free. It is mans worst inhumanity to man multiplied by 500 and set free. It is the FINAL dark age of mankind.

I think plastic fur is the last thing to set your sights on when protesting Games Workshop.

The Emperor did NOT want to be seen as God and was quite specific about this. He did not want religion at all. In fact, he cracked down on, and punished, cults that tried to worship him. It was only after he was struck down and confined to the Golden Throne that his followers developed him into a religious figure.

You are right about 40K reflecting humanity as its worst and darkest. From an artistic point of view, it reflects a civilization that was driven forward at high speed by an incredibly charismatic leader, suddenly faltering and stumbling - and even regressing, in ways - when that leader is suddenly lost. You could almost draw a parallel with Herbert's Butlerian Jihad, which in turn draws inspiration from the spread of Islam attacking anything considered progress towards enlightenment and fixating its adherents into a 6th century mindset. So, too, the leaderless Terrans are locked at the same point they were at when the Emperor fell, declaring anything new or different to be "Heresy" and punished by the ultimate sanction of complete biological extermination of entire planets. It's actually a fascinating backstory when you consider it closely.

From a practical point of view, it's a tabletop strategy game so you need to justify a steady stream of conflict, which is a bit difficult in a Utopian society of peace and prosperity.

Also, the recruitment process differs between chapters, though most (well, all) of them do require applicants to survive some form of trials to weed out the weak of body and spirit.

I didn't imply it. I said it. Quite clearly. PETA appear to be focusing on the 40K universe. If you read what I said, I noted that many characters (and therefore models) in the 40K universe keep pelts etc as trophies from their trials, or hunting, or whatever - which are then displayed on their uniforms. The Space Wolves are singled out because of their obsession with hanging bits of dead wolf off their armour.

On a minor point, there are plenty of characters in that universe who are technologically restricted enough, or stubborn enough, that they would use fur instead of other materials. It's one of the dichotomies of the universe, the sharp divide between the "cutting edge" technology of the armies of the Imperium, and the sometimes backwards and feral civilizations they encounter - including former Terran colonies that were cut off for hundreds or thousands of years and regressed to more primitive states.

I am starting to think that PETA is just a front for the Skaven. If they start messing with Bloodbowl I'm gonna lose it.

40k isn't your average technologically enlightened science fiction society, quite the opposite. The Imperium is a stagnant, superstitious and religious galaxy spanning bureaucracy. They pray to "machine spirits" and technology is completely monopolized and stagnant.

Factions that would use fur:

Space Marines - and far from only the Space Wolves.
Imperial Guard.
Eldar.
Dark Eldar.
Orks.
Chaos.

The only factions that wouldn't use fur would be Necrons, Tyranids and probably Tau.

Oh, please, whatever you do, don't take my words as a denunciation of the 40K universe. I'm often heard saying "a poison curse on all heretics"
The sheer volume of information contained in the backstory of 40K in mindboggling. The concept of the the time before the Unification Wars alone could allow for any current SciFi setting and there would still be thousands of years left of void to fill.

GW has taken all that is great from the SciFi people love and allowed it to progress to a "natural state". Like Herbert's diaspora (with the death of Leto II) rather than the Butlerian Jihad.

Major changes have already taken place with GW and their IP (mostly Slaanesh) in order to both make the IP more secure and make the game (not so much the fluff) more kid friendly. This year will see a run up to the release of the newest edition of the game an many are concerned about the direction it will take.

I would argue about the practical point issue. The "table top strategy game" is only one of many aspects of the hobby. There is also painting/collecting miniatures (games workshop and Forge World) as well as following the development of the storyline (Games Workshop and Black Library). There is enough of an interest in these other aspects of the hobby that GW has created subsidiary companies to provide services the customers want (miniatures, novels, artwork, terrain).

With their expansion into the video game and app markets their profits have increased significantly and they have come a long way from the old "deodorant tank" days.

GW Money

Perhaps their spike in profits, popularity in GB, and prolific use in Trump memes can explain why PETA has come out against them now.

As a long time Warhammer 40k player, if all they have to complain aboit the fictional setting is fur, then it just makes it funnier!

The whole "God Emperor" meme for Trump started with Warhammer 40k lore, they have just realized it exists, and only got as far as an image search.

"There is no peace among the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter and the laughter of thirsting gods"

"To err is human, to err again is treachery"

"Let the galaxy burn!"

"an open mind is like a fortress, its gates unbarred and unguarded"

Go away PETA, dont you have animals to euthanize?

I always rather liked the Squats. However I seemed to be in a very small( no pun intended) minority.

Also Blood Angels suck (terrible pun intended).

Dark angels were by far the coolest legion/chapter ( delete based on preferred time period).
