Back when I was in ASW (CW), the most important task was to make sure there was a relative plot for every Soviet nuke off each coast. When the Navy
lost datum on any of them, it resulted in huge sorties to re-acquire them. We were actually very good at it, even before the massive changes in
technology. Their subs were always noisier than ours, but do not know how that plays out today, and we did not have too much trouble finding them
after they "disappeared". Even today, this must be a big priority, and the lack of funding to supply enough patrols when needed is troubling.
Hey, been out of it for a long time, and perhaps advances in acoustics, IR, and satellite technologies make it less important. One thing must still
be important though... when the equipment detected missile silo's opening, there was a critical time window to get a P-3 ( Now P-8) on-station. That
was really what the game was all about.
