Actually bale was a twin.. at the start of the movie when he was a stooge he did claim he had a trick that no one else could do.. when jackman said any trick can be duplicated, bale said not this one..
Also when to knot tie was done and jackmans wife died it was the twin who did it that's how he didn't know which knot it was..
And then he met his future wife and appeared in her flat it was the twin..

All this happened before the event with tesla in london...

My understanding is that bale's character(s) were identical twins. The theme being that the feats of nature will essentially always outsmart and be one step ahead of any madman using science to achieve supremacy.

But wouldn't it have been jackman that died every time? Or did the machine work on the basis it teleported the original and left a clone in place.. but then wouldn't the original jackman have been shot by his own clone after the first test..
