ReutersU.S. President Donald Trump said on Twitter on Tuesday that he would "send in the Feds" if Chicago doesn't "fix the horrible 'carnage' going on."
In his inauguration speech on Friday, Trump accused the Washington establishment of protecting itself but abandoning regular citizens who have suffered from poverty and crime. "This American carnage stops right here and stops right now," he said.
There's no further substance to this article. I wonder who it is in the Trump Administration that's providing Reuters a heads-up??
There are something like 70,000 gang members in Chicago. I cannot begin to fathom the Federal force that would be required to ferret them out and neutralize them. We're talking elements the size of six or seven US Army Divisions of mercenaries that are well entrenched throughout the city. Where would they put 70K criminals if they caught them?
What would happen if the thugs started scattering across the US like cockroaches?

While folks safe from the carnage, snipe over the internet, folks in the crime ridden section of Chicago see hope....
You don't play politics with American LIVES..... IF the CITY FAILS to protect the CITIZENS due to politics...
And the State fails to step in... we finally have a leader who will...
The suffering must stop, the killing must stop... These are fellow citizens.. fellow Americans... not a subjugated voting block......
What about Detroit? The MOST crime. It comes in at #1 for violent crime. Should he not start there and then Memphis, Oakland, St Louis, Baltimore, Cleveland, Stockton, Indianapolis....there are many more before getting to Chicago's violent crime rate.

sounds great when you first think about it but couldn't trump use his role as president to help rebuild family values, education and jobs instead of threatening violence? thats all we need is a military force coming in cracking skulls putting more people in jail and creating more hatred from the inner city communities? why doesn't trump come down to the hood and stand with the people, because its much easier to send threats from twitter that's why!!

You don't think the Fed's are already combating gangs? And btw, gangs aren't just black and brown.
99% are. Prove me wrong.

As far as practical, real solutions, there are a number. But to think "send in the feds" is somehow anything resembling an answer, is ridiculous.
Do people not understand the complexity of the issue? People are like "finally, a president, Trump, is going to do something". Uh, if it was easy, someone simply "caring" would have fixed it a long time ago...
People acting like it's analogous to calling the Orkin man for pest control...
"We take an empty 2 liter Pepsi bottle, fill it with anti-bug juice, strap on a couple of M80s, and boom! Critters no more".

Now I live in Atlanta-major gangs. They're everywhere-it is a huge problem everywhere in the US.
Trump needs to address this as a national problem-not just Chicago.

A part of me says there is some hope but only some Chicago has been corrupt since Mayor William Thompson gave Al Capone the run of the city, its pension funds are a disaster,at least 21000 in CPS schools each year are being set up to fail for life, the city is flirting with bankruptcy etc etc...your going to need a seachange in management to make anything stick.
sorry it's so cluttered!

“The chief of internal affairs is the most powerful person in the Chicago Police Department,” Spalding observed. “They report only to the superintendent.” Yet because of Rivera’s failure to exercise that power, “it shifted to the corrupt officers.” Watts understood this, she said. She heard him on more than one occasion say in the presence of other officers at the station house, “You think the feds are ever going to come against me? If they come after me, I’m going to sing a song so loud it’ll crumble the department and bring all the bosses down with me.” This was not idle talk, she said. He was sending a message.
The murder rate in the U.S. is projected to rise by about 13% this year (2016), but almost half of that increase is due to violence in just one city—Chicago.
A new study released Monday by New York University’s Brennan Center projects that while crime overall in 2016 has remained virtually unchanged from last year, the murder rate is expected to rise 13.1% thanks to unprecedented violence in Chicago, which has seen more than 500 murders this year (2016) alone.

It amazes me how excited Trump supporters get over s# like this. The Federal government has been involved in Chicago. There's FBI, DEA, ATF, etc all working in Chicago.
So what federal help are they supposed to be asking for? Contrary to what some posters seem to believe, the President cannot deploy National Guard troops for civil law enforcement. Posse Comitatus Act anyone? Gov. Rauner could deploy them but he's already made it clear that he has no intention of doing so.
