Conspiracy theories come to Brazil.

A Brazilian Supreme Court Justice named Teori Zavascki just died in a small plane crash off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. He was leading a huge investigation called "Operation Carwash," which was probing corruption in state-run oil company Petrobras. Apparently a sizable list of Brazilian politicians have been caught up in this.

The question is, did he have "something" that other investigators or political figures didn't have access to, and if so, what was it? We may never know, but if the corruption is deeply seated in various government officials/agencies, the "investigation" into the crash won't be much help either.

Remember Kennedy's Son, John F. Kennedy Jr. who crashed in a small plane near Cape Cod in 1999?

Wow. This is messy. Petrobras is state-run, and it jointly owns "Braskem SA" with another company, Odebrecht.

REUTERS 22 December: Odebrecht settlement spurs bribery inquiries across Latin America

Odebrecht said it paid $439 million outside of Brazil, with the largest bribe admissions abroad in Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and Panama.

snip

Brazilian prosecutors say they are certain Odebrecht's way of doing business in Brazil, where the company is accused of paying out $2 billion in bribes in the past 15 years, was the way it operated around the globe.

snip

Experts on corporate bribery said the Odebrecht admissions in a dozen countries - which also include Angola and Mexico - could subject Odebrecht to new investigations.

Looks like the plea agreements were negotiated in such a way that details are NOT sealed.

He was a week away from lifting the secrecy of 77 plea arrangements that would potentially incriminate half of the congress as well as former politicians (including presidents).

Very very suspicious.

Here in Brazil, by checking facebook pages, I can verify the public opinion goes this way.

A sizable list of Brazilian politicians have been caught up in a corruption scandal?

Will wonders never cease.

Wouldn't shock me at all to find out he'd been whacked. People think politics and the legal system in the US are jacked (they are), the Brazilians could give us lessons in some areas.
