There is a lot of historical precedent for this; people taking a defiant pride in adopting nicknames which were originally hostile. Apart from the two
examples I mentioned, we have seen "Contemptible" (the British army of 1914, according to the Kaiser), "Beggars" (the Dutch independence movement,
according to the Spanish), "Methodist", and probably even "Christian".
People self-describing as "deplorable" are simply following the same defiant route.
