You articulate the problem well. The 'auto corporations' think themselves global...international and, therefore, above national interests. Yet, they forget their roots. The base that developed and allowed them to flourish.

They now realize there are consequences to the myopic view that increasing profit margin is everything.

As far as Germany and BMW goes, sorry, but if an example has to be made to the remaining auto manufacturers BMW will suffice. Americans have many options of automobile manufacturers to choose from other than BMW. BMW, on the other hand, has only one American market.

Rather simple, isn't it?

According to Fortune magazine, 70% of the vehicles BMW produces at its Sparta (US) plant are Exported out of the US.

Dumb Dumb could be doing nothing more than forcing more good paying jobs overseas.

And if his actions force a trade war, as I pointed out previously, the US has neither the infrastructure nor the trained manpower to make up the loss.

Lose/Lose.

BMW sells more vehicles outside the US than it imports to the US.

BMW days are numbered anyway. They are no longer at the standard of quality close to Mercedes and they keep trying to sell them for comparable prices. Ask any BMW technician. They are snip. I have built a few new dealerships in our area and all the money goes into the repair center with 100k fireplaces and any coffee you can think of. That's where you spend all your time.

Cadillac and Lincoln are going to knock them off their prissy little block.

That has nothing to do with the thread, just my BMW rant.

Mercedes is at least holding their own and giving drivers what they pay for.

They could, and Trump's tariff threat is only on vehicles imported to the US from Mexico (the real way he's gonna make them pay for that wall, by the way). the problem is that BMW is obviously lying, or they wouldn't care.
