Otts, if you consider yourself a 'fiscal conservative" and a "social liberal", then you're quite a bit like me.

However, I don't like the term "liberal" anything or "conservative" anything, because both of those bankrupt pseudo-philosophies are, in the main, anti-freedom. they both pretend to be guardians of our freedoms, yet they are their betrayers.

"Liberals" allow you "social" freedoms, i.e., free to make most life-style choices, while "conservatives" allow you some "fiscal" freedoms, i.e., letting you keep most of your own earnings.

But in both cases, these various flavors of statists take away more rights than they preserve.

I believe in freedom of choice for everything: guns, gay marriages, tax credits for private schools, abortions, suicide, dueling -- anything that two or more consenting and competent adults choose to do as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else.

I consider some of the activities morally wrong and I would never do them, but that does not mean I want them banned or regulated by the government.

Over 200 years ago our countries were broken apart, with the southern half (mine) trying to enhance certain liberties. It didn't work, of course; the mischief of our present thugocracy is an order of magnitude worse than anything poor old crazy George Hanover could do.

Which brings me to my "pimps and hos" poem, which you as a Quebecois may appreciate:

"And so I say to you pimps and hos,
'Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose'."

I consider my self very similar also, off_the_street. I have been called a socialist communist here in bouts of pure labelling without any knowledge of where I stand. Australia is a capitalist country with mixed social benefits schemes. I like the way my country is set up economically (to a degree) and am very pleased with how John Howard steered this country to become the fastest growing economy in the western world. But I still believe we are over taxed with a lot of ministerial wastage. Nothing is black or white and often it's the greys that work better.

However, like you I believe in freedom to own arms, which John Howard has almost single handedly eroded with overtly strict limitations put in place. Conservative Americans applaud Johnny for his service to them but don't realise he is one of the most rabidly anti-gun people on this earth. Like you I believe that what people choose to do in their private lives is nobody's business regarding gay marriage and abortion etc. I am pro-military and believe that force is a legitimate action in circumstances. We would not be here if it wasn't for a man with a gun at different times throughout history, both good and bad. I actually had a person tell me that we don't need a military which is probably the most idiotic thing I have ever heard. It's also a reason why the Green party will never be more than a few senate seats to keep the bastards honest on certain policies, but nothing more.

I just can't call myself left or right as there are too many things I appreciate and dislike from both sides of the spectrum. Some people don't understand this and feel the need to belong to a bigger team. I am an independent thinker.

Again, you put it perfectly Otts. But alas, it is late here...so late the sun is coming up, and I must leave putting the finishing touches on this animation for when my mind is revived. G'night.
