Washington Post Cries Uncle: Stop Using ‘Tainted’ Term ‘Fake News’

Writing at the Washington Post, Margaret Sullivan bemoans the fact that conservatives have flipped the meaning of “fake news” from a term used by the mainstream media to attack stories that are troublesome for progressives to a label to call out the media’s false narratives

The establishment media took a big hit today. Their campaign to discredit media sites that disagree with them by labeling websites as "Fake News" is going into the grave today! The Washington Post acknowledged it backfired here:
It’s time to retire the tainted term ‘fake news’

So, here’s a modest proposal for the truth-based community. Let’s get out the hook and pull that baby off stage. Yes: Simply stop using it. Instead, call a lie a lie. Call a hoax a hoax. Call a conspiracy theory by its rightful name. After all, “fake news” is an imprecise expression to begin with.

Really can't expect for them to admit it was an attempt to have their agenda be the only agenda.

They should never have attempted to suppress freedom of speech in the first place.

What goes around, comes around.

One's idea of a truth-based community is another's idea of a govt propaganda community and I doubt that will change.

I think this is a good thing. At least if encourages the media to go on record, to be definitive which will then allow for some civil recourse. The term "fake news" had too many outs. Too weasel-y.

I thought it was really foolish of the biggest purveyors of fake news to start throwing around the term fake news.it was inevitable that this term would come back to be used against them. a lot of people already knew that the MSM was full of crap but we just didn`t have adequate term to describe what the MSM was doing. words like spin, propaganda etc just didn`t accurately describe what it is the MSM is doing, but fake news, that`s the perfect term to describe the MSM.

Lets compromise and use fake news as a label rather then a fact when referring to the MSM . That way snoops can change their narrative ever so slightly .

NO!!!

Absolutely keep using the term "fake News", until those parts of the MSM that lied go under financially.

Then and only then bring back "news", along with a separate section, clearly labelled "editorial/opinion".

Only then will those bastards earn *some* respect.

They love the term as long as it's silencing dissent they don't like. The second it's no longer useful to the left wing establishment media, it's gotta go.

Agreed! If the MSM doesn't like the term "Fake News", ramp up it's use to the stratosphere.

CBS radio news ended it's broadcast last week by saying that they are the best source for "real news". The idiots must be feeling really guilty for being caught. Low IQ idiots are ALWAYS caught.

Amusing.

Oh, and they left out bias and propaganda.

Lies, hoaxes, conspiracy theory, bias and propaganda.

People might actually have to start thinking for themselves again. Imagine that.

I can't wait to see CNN go under and their ratings drop to the point not even a Canadian company would bail them out by buying them out. Such crap...so glad Trump stepped up to wake people up by emphasizing how much of liars the MSM are.

Great job guys you co-oped a term that perfectly explained something. ATS helped make it completely worthless. Enjoy the continuation a BS news stories only made to get click revenue with no fact behind it. Long live Alex Jones and Macedonian Ad revenue.

MSM outlets like the Washington Post fertilized the ground to grow all of the alternative media out there today.
You know about fertilizer, right?

They really should have seen it coming.

Blinded by their own sense of intellectual superiority. It's made the MSM the laughing stock of the world, and rightly so.

Let's use it more. It's the only accurate term that refers to these mainstream parasites.

No dumb people that don't follow up on any claims are why Fake News is so popular. Alternative media is fine as long as they source their information.

You have to remember the timing of all this.

None of the typical slander was working.

Once it became clear that Trump was going to be the Republican nominee, those on the left used the same old, yet typically successful, playbook.

===========

Trumps a racist.... crap... that isn't working.

Trumps a sexist.... what? that isn't working either?

Trump has mental issues (and there will be an "intervention")..... dang it! STILL not working?

Hillary damn near passed out after 9/11 function.... so lets say Trump has health issues. WHAT?!?!?! Still not working?

Okay... okay.... lets just call every dissenting opinion/bit of information "Fake News"... yeah, that's it. We'll just call if fake news.

==========

If you remember when this started, the Left was in very desperate dire straights. I sort of think of those behind the "Fake News" stuff as the Eye at the end of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. If you recall, in the movie version, as the eye's structure began to break apart and the eye itself was falling, it wildly swung it's gaze up, down, left and right, DESPERATELY trying to find a way to survive, even if for a few minutes.

From that type of desperation and without time to think it through, the term Fake News was born.

CNN will forever be known as the Clinton News Network, or Cartoon News Network.

It has stuck. Their credibility is mostly out the window. When you hear the words, 'fake news', you automatically think CNN now. NYT and WaPo aren't too far behind, imo.
