US Designates Election Infrastructure as 'Critical'

Adding more fuel to the fire, the Department of Homeland Security is declaring the U.S. election system to be critical infrastructure.

This comes with "news" that Russians and other foreigners are hacking into government assets.

Secretary Jeh Johnson says it's the right thing to do now.

The government released a "declassified" report today that "possibly" implicates Russia.

US Designates Election Infrastructure as 'Critical'

Citing increasingly sophisticated cyber bad actors and an election infrastructure that's "vital to our national interests," Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson announced Friday that he's designating U.S. election systems critical infrastructure, a move that provides more federal help for state and local governments to keep their election systems safe from tampering.

"Given the vital role elections play in this country, it is clear that certain systems and assets of election infrastructure meet the definition of critical infrastructure, in fact and in law," Johnson said in a statement. He added: "Particularly in these times, this designation is simply the right and obvious thing to do."

The determination came after months of review and despite opposition from many states worried that the designation would lead to increased federal regulation or oversight on the many decentralized and locally run voting systems across the country. It was announced on the same day a declassified U.S. intelligence report said Russian President Vladimir Putin "ordered" an influence campaign in 2016 aimed at the U.S. presidential election.

Georgia’s top election official this week accused the U.S. Department of Homeland Security of trying to hack a computer network containing the state’s voter registration database. Brian Kemp, Georgia’s secretary of state, demanded information about the alleged intrusion attempt in a letter sent Thursday to Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson.

I am sure DHS is willing to help with any security. lol. DHS is getting a make over once Trump is in.

Would this be the same DHS that hacked 5 states on election day?

I posted on this possibility on 12/31. Here comes Homeland Security Presidential Directive 7 which empowers the Secretary of Homeland Security to, in part:

be responsible for coordinating the overall national effort to enhance the protection of the critical infrastructure and key resources of the United States. The Secretary shall serve as the principal Federal official to lead, integrate, and coordinate implementation of efforts among Federal departments and agencies, State and local governments, and the private sector to protect critical infrastructure and key resources.

Funny. I don't recall any state election bureau to have been compromised. What's that noise I hear? The slow creep of federal intrusion into state election systems.

Making a short calendar leading to 1/20. Cannot come fast enough.

What kind of half snipped 'logic' is that ?

Voting machines weren't hacked,

Paper ballots weren't hacked.

The Electoral college wasn't hacked.

MAYBE the DNC got hacked.

Political parties aren't government 'infrastructure'.

I expect this BULLSNIP from a political hack like Johnson that is a POLITICAL APPOINTEE.

Precisely. It is a politically manufactured power grab. All the sudden what has worked for centuries needs an intervention by the federal government.

Is it possible that the "intelligence community" can now say that Russians are the reason why Republicans now hold 70% of elected offices across the country?

After all, Russian hackers had to get started and hone their skills, long before 2016.
