Yeah, if it's literally hate speech then the publishers lawyers would have pulled it anyway - nothing to do with being toxic per se, it would just not be considered suitable to publish, but that is a seriously big point. In the UK (what this thread is about) things considered extremely unpalatable are published regularly. Hate speech is extremely specific to incitement to violence on individuals or groups of individuals.

The Chicago review of books isn't anything to do with the UK, but maybe the UK publishers just thought that the guy is a bit of a w####r with some weird following in the US, but there is no info to suggest anyone in the UK would be aware of some of the targets of his 'wit' and those that do wouldn't be prepared to pay good money to buy a book where he writes about them?
