I came up with a theory when I was a teenager and admittedly was just being a contrarian at the time but 20 years later I still think it holds up.

There is no such thing as the present. There is only the future and the past. When you refer the the present by the time you think of it, it's already the past.

Any thoughts?

The present is the arrow of time. Freeze-frame, and you are in the past.

I think it's a pretty common adolescent "what if", actually. And has equal impact on practical matters.

The future doesn't exist yet, and the past doesn't exist anymore, so the word for that is the present.

It always exists.

Mike Tyson said "Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth."

The past is your plan.
The present is the punch.
The future is up to you.

What if we could remember the future the same way we remember the past?

Of course, some people's memories don't work so good. (Not mine. My memory is perfect.)

You can't remember the future.
If you could you would probably remember it wrong.

Nope!
There is not anything other than Here1 Now!
The present.
You perceive thoughts in the present, have memories in the present, imagine a future in the present...
Not at any moment of Universal existence is not Here! Now! in the 'present'!
The 'future' and the 'past' only exist in your thoughts, thoughts that are perceived Now!
And the present moment is, literally, 'timeless'!
(See; Planck moment)
Even if you strung every moment of Universal existence 'end' to 'end', We would still be, literally, 'timeless'!!

With no 'time', 'future' and 'past' are no more than illusions, figments, mirages... that we buy into!

You think it is.
Your mom has different memories of you than you do.

Ironically, I was 20 years old the first time I read that. I was stationed in LAFB, VA. I was at EOR, having pulled the duty being so new. If any of you have worked EOR you know, depending on the day, it can be rather slow. We used to watch Jerry Springer a lot.

Well, I eventually got sick of Springer and turned to DA's book. Just about the time I was reading the beginning, and that passage, the door slammed open and it was my expediter.

"What the hell, [insert name]? You've got two jets sitting here waiting for pins to be pulled dumbass!"

I looked at him and said, I'm on lunch.

I wasn't on lunch.

Always.

Last year was particularly bad. Trying to keep it in the now. Within a week or so, anyway.

Last year was the worst year of my life.
That's saying something.
Things can always get better and hope they get better for you.

I hope this year is better for ya.

I'm supposed to be missing someone, but nobody will tell me who it is, so my present is going on 9 years now. Working on putting it all in the past.

So to answer the op, I guess your present depends on how fast you're living.
