The largest retailer in the world, Wal-Mart, has changed its definition of "immediate family" to recognize domestic partners and civil unions. It is unclear if this change will also make the domestic partners eligible for benefits. The company declined to comment when asked if this represented a position statement on the issue of gay marriage.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is expanding the definition of "immediate family" in its employee-ethics policy to account for laws in states that recognize domestic partnerships and civil unions.

The change drew quick praise from a major gay-rights lobbying organization.

The revised policy, which was disclosed Wednesday in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission recognizes that in some states "immediate family" includes an employee's same-sex partner.

Its a funny thing. In California, especially those based in the Bay Area, its a rarity that a company does not offer domestic partners benefits. Its a good call and lots of other Fortune 500 companies already do this. Now it remains to be seen if they will offer these benefits, but It seems they will have too now.

Actually, this does not appear to address employee benefits at all, though it may follow through to that area now that it's been defined in this policy.

The revisions deal with sections of the company's ethics code that bar employees from using confidential information to benefit themselves or immediate family members and from approaching Wal-Mart's suppliers about jobs for immediate family members, the company said Thursday.

This revision actually focuses on protecting Walmart's interests at the moment. Why groups are applauding this is interesting, since really it is reigning in some actions of people.

Like a health plan for one heh. Wal-Mart wants to open up a store near my house, and I and alot of other people are fighting it, but since its private land we, along with every small business owner will get the shaft. Unemployment will go up, homelessness will go up and the landscape will look even uglier then it already is. First a Homedepot now a Wal-Mart....Great.... Only hope now is Unionization and maybe just maybe we can force them out. Sure it will mean alot of unemployed minimum wage workers, but after walmart is gone then the small businesses have a chance again. Small Business
Multinationals

Walmart is having problems with the benefits if offers, not all employees can afford the cost.

And for the small businesses around when a walmart open in an area, they all will go away as the big conglomerate that walmart is absorb the market.

They all in one store.
