The Russian president has rejected a suggestion of the foreign ministry to expel 35 American diplomats in response to a similar move by the US. He said Obama’s act was designed to provoke a reaction, but Russia would not take the bait.

“We reserve the right to retaliate, but we will not sink to the level of this irresponsible ‘kitchen’ diplomacy. We will take further moves on restoring Russian-American relations based on the policies that the administration of President-elect Donald Trump adopts,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a statement published by the Kremlin website.

Putin said that, unlike the Obama administration, Russia will not target foreign diplomats and their families days before New Year’s celebrations.

“We will not forbid families and children from spending the New Year’s holidays at the places they are used to. Moreover, I invite the children of all American diplomats with accreditation in Russia to New Year’s and Christmas festivities in the Kremlin,” the Russian president said.

This is just breaking, and sorry that other thread got removed, but ATS rules are rules. You can't just post a link and a title. (Thanks for the reminder, DTOM).

Anyway, this is important, as Putin appears to have taken the moral high ground here. The bait was dangled with Obama removing Russian diplomats, but Putin smartly refused to take it. Nope.

Instead, he turned right around and invited Americans in Russia to attend celebrations in Moscow. Putin is no fool. He will grudgingly put up with the last days of the Obama administration, and await Trump's new tenure. Amen to that. At least let's give peace and restored relations a chance.

Besides, in case any of you haven't seen it, the DHS just issued a Joint Action Report with the new supposed "evidence" of the Russian hacking, and to me it appears to be total BS. Read more about that here:

Seems like Russia is playing it cool. They don't want to respond to Obama's baseless provocation and aggression in case it damages future relations with the new President. Which is good because there is a real opportunity for some progress and cooperation with Russia with Trump as President, if his campaign speeches and positions are anything to go by.

Won't stop Obama acting like a playground bully though. Just a few weeks and this will all be over.

The Russians can hold on for 3 weeks.

The Syrian peace deal, without the U.S at the table, is humiliation enough for now.

Taking this in conjunction with "Russia and Turkey arrange a ceasefire in Syria", President Obama must be getting the sense that someone is running rings round him.

America's got nothing to lose in regards to any form of interaction with Russia. Russia is sunk and desperate. Unfortunately for Putin, history matters. He needs to disappear from politics permanently much like Obama hopefully will. He's incompetent and it's for the best.

Replace the word "sanctions" with "siege measures".

Except that Russia is a disaster and America is doing fine. I'd say the person who keeps the cleaner nicer home gets the last laugh. Both need to go. They failed in different ways.

These final days are really showing the level of incompetence of the Obama administration.

Once again, Putin demonstrates he has class.

Once again, Barack demonstrates he is a petty politician.

Putin is level headed enough to recognize the signs of a petulant child when he sees them.

Obama is really going down in spectacular fashion though knifing everyone and everything he can get his hands on in an attempt to make sure everyone knows how mad he is that we voted against him and what he wanted this election cycle.

I often wonder if the politicians here in the United States realize that there sometimes childish antics have consequences. Do they even realize that some of the decisions they make affect people and there families. It sure doesn't seem like it to me.

"Class" has nothing to do with world politics. A better way to view the situation is to think that Putin acknowledges that they were doing very dirty work and are taking their punishment with the expelling of the diplomats. For him to do the typical trick of expelling a like number of our people would have caused the US to give some evidence for the crimes that he would not want to be shown. So he accepts being caught with his hand in the cookie jar, knowing that Obama is just trying show that he has some brass--which everybody knows he does not have. A clever move on Putin's part.

Trump, are you watching this cunning fellow?

The past few months have really exposed how pathetically childish and sly the democrats are. Truly embarrassing for America. I hope Trump can make a real difference and turn the country around.

The high road?
He interfered in our democratic procedures.
He didn't take any high road. He's not retaliating because he knows he's guilty .
Obama's first has come down.
Let trump take the sanctions away.
That will make the Russians love him and America doubt his loyalties.
Good move.

Totally wrong. Understand politics. They all play the same game but their playbook was not printed on the internet or released to the public.
If you think differently your just sadly mistaken.

How much corruption has trump already shown to have in his little circle. And there will be much more.

Nope. Putin's first reaction was to eject US representatives from Russia, he made the announcement early this morning. I got it on my phone news alerts. Then, he was talked down by his aides and allies, and retracted his ejection order.
