I am so sick of these "Reality" BS shows. How can they call it reality when everything is rehearsed and has no reality in it? Truth in advertising these things are not, they suck. Every time I see 10 seconds of any of them I want to scratch my eyes out.

Can someone please tell me WHY? these damn things are so popular? Really, the list is long of stupid shows, just the names of them make me cringe.

Give me some real "Fake" shows to watch any day over these idiotic shows, please.

There are maybe 6 shows I can stomach:

American Restoration
Counting Cars
American Pickers
Pawn Stars
Tanked
Overhauling

Even these shows are a bit silly, but they have content that I can live with. The rest of them just are plain ridiculous.

End of rant.

These are the 21st Century version of the circus freak shows. They are on because they make money and are very cheap to produce. It all started back in the 90's when actors pay got so outrageous, the studios decided to make this crap with no name actors that did not demand million dollar pay per episode.

When we as a species stop craving this type of "entertainment" we will have truly evolved as higher beings.

I'm with you on this. I can't change the channel fast enough when these so called "reality" shows come on. It's beyond me how people can watch this regurgitated crap. The dumbing down of America is the only reality that I see in them.

The topic reminds me of the lyrics to "Scared for the Children" off the new Jeff Beck album.

Computer screens and magazines
Manufactured hopes and dreams
Playing in a concrete box 'cause mother's got her shows to watch
I'm scared for the children

That being said, gotta run, the Kardashians just came on.

Ditch cable and watch what you want to. Even those "educational" cable channels are a circus now days. Just do research into a topic if what you're looking for is shows that are not Reality TV. Have most shows gone that path, very likely so, if the demographics decide against them they will have to adopt to the change just like before Reality TV was a thing.

Reality shows aren't really for me either but at least you know beforehand it's all rubbish.

The thing that I've been deploring for some time now is the dumbing down of history documentaries. Not only that, occasionally I've noticed that they sanitise or omit the odd pertinent detail. For PC reasons, I can only assume, knowing the nature of those details.

I rarely watch TV now and I don't think I'm alone in that. Perhaps we'll be lucky and the advertisers will notice the shrinking audience and demand that the TV stations up their game a bit*

* I know... cloud cuckoo land.

The six shows you did list are heavily scripte too.

Pawn Stars is on a set and not the real shop.. Extra "customers" are actors... Same with Pickers and the rest... Sets and scripts...

Look it up.... We are all gullible!

I see that you can "stomach" American Pickers.

In the last season or two I understand that they visited Paxton, Illinois, to go through a "collector's" stuff. I have this info from a good, second hand source: First, you don't believe that they, themselves, drive that van around the country to visit their stops, do you? They don't, they fly in and slip behind the wheel at a close range.

As for the goodies that they find, or at least some of them. My source told me that a week before the show that a semi-truck pulled into the town and unloaded a host of objects to be found when the stars worked their way through the assemblage. How their system may work otherwise, I have no idea, but salting the merchandise is a key aspect.

The principle need of all of these shows is to have the appearance of real drama on display every few minutes, one way or another. The drama is created between the humans involved or in the difficulties of the quest for the object, whether gold, or a old company sign with bullet holes in it.

Most of those shows are no insult to people that watch them and believe that is true reality being displayed before their watchful eyes. The producers know exactly what the public will accept and provides a fitting and tailored tale.
