Well, I maintain that most sinkholes are not merely cases of gravitational collapse.
To the contrary, most sinkholes are the result of the ground being drawn or sucked down.
The core of the earth is contracting due to its cooling down.

most sink holes are caused by water escaping and washing away the sub ground , the surface crust is usually strong enough to stand the passing of traffic until the hole gets bigger and then collapses .

anybody that has attended a burst will have noticed that when you have dug out the hole the water never comes over the top of the hole , that is because the water has already found an escape route and with that has taken a lot of the sub earth with it .

Among the scientific community, it's known as "postulating."

Sure...but usually postulating in scientific fields involves some sort of maths or a very deep knowledge of the subject.

It's not usually some guy just coming up with a theory with no means or knowledge of how to prove it to be correct or at least along the right path...

This is a point I have made many times on ATS, usually when a member posts his theory on dark matter or gravity or something along those lines, without any knowledge of the maths involved in physics theories like those.

if a land mass of any size up to a tectonic plate was in imminent danger of dropping, say, just a few feet, what would you expect just before the drop?

Well, there is the story of the Mianius River Bridge, part of Interstate 95, in Connecticut. For a time before the collapse of that bridge, nearby residents reported strange noises being emitted from that bridge.

Then there is the story of the Sampoong Department Store in South Korea. There were loud bangs shortly before most of that big store collapsed.

Moving on further...

There is discussion above about how sinkholes are usually formed by underground water flows wearing away and washing away soil as is typically the cause behind sinkholes in the state of Florida. Well, to those respondents, I ask: what about the huge, very deep, and mysterious sinkholes that have opened up in Siberia which have no such explanation??

People say that there is no scientific basis for the premises in the original post.

Well, it’s been stated by scientists that the core of the earth will completely cool down in 2.5 billion years at which time this planet will definitely be categorized as a “dead planet.”

Along the way to total cooling down, the core’s temperature will continue to go down gradually, and, as is the case with most things, it will contract in size gradually.

It’s time for a little math.

Let’s say that the core shrinks in volume by just 1%.

Because linear dimensions of an object are proportional to the cube root of the object’s volume, then a 1% volume decrease leaves 99% of that volume. The cube root of 99% is 0.9966555. The original linear whole (1.00 or 100%) less the new linear percentage of 0.9966555 is 0.0033445 representing linear shrinkage.

There is approximately a 4,000 mile radius to the planet, so 4,000 * 0.0033445 = a 13+ mile drop for the crust to meet the core.

Doing these calculations for a 1/10,000 contraction of the core (not a 1/100 contraction as above) results in the crust’s having to drop some 704 feet to meet the core.

If a single tectonic plate were to drop abruptly by just 4 feet, the shock of the jolt will cause widespread destruction, not to mention monstrous tsunamis in all directions which will take out numerous nuclear power plants.

The cooling of the core has already been going on for some 4.5 billion years. Maybe, just maybe, at this late date in 2016, things may be hanging by a thread.
