A Wisconsin teenager in jail charged with three counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide after he attempted to poison his family. The teen had placed rat poison in the food and was discovered when the pellets appeared in coffee grounds. The boy has told investigators, he did not want to kill his family, only make them sick.

PORTAGE, Wisconsin (AP) -- A teenager put mouse poison into his family's food for five weeks before his stepfather discovered the pellets in some coffee grounds, according to a criminal complaint.

The 15-year-old was charged with three counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide. A judge set bail at $25,000 cash Wednesday.

The boy's mother, stepfather and the couple's 3-year-old daughter had experienced stomach pains, heartburn and vomiting, the complaint said.

I hope that a child protective services inspection and interview is also performed. There may be a reason that this child acted out in this manner and that should be ruled out. However, the strychnine used in rat poison has a cumulative effect, and had this gone on much longer, the whole family could have been at severe risk.
