I have a feeling this guy is going to have a really good talking to by a city attorney Monday. And he will suddenly remember that his products are not some widget that they can run to a different store to buy. His product is an important part of a safe and habitable home.

He will change his tune when he is informed of his corporate responsibility.

Except that would be socialism.

It is a private company not a public utility. If he closed the store can a city attorney come in and force him not to? No.

The legality of it is that Trump supporter isn't a protected class. Though he is a royal A-hole he isn't breaking the law and the state can't force him to be a utility.

Legally? No (you're thinking of discrimination, anyway). Political affiliation isn't a protected class in Maine but I would say morally it is discrimination. To me protected classes are only needed because people always try to shut out people they don't like... it's wrong, period.

Every business that exists in the public, benefits from the public (roads, piping, wiring etc...) and your business contract with the locality (almost every business license has this clause) states that you will serve the public... then you don't get to decide who ISN'T the public. That includes deplorable Trump supporters.

I can easily envision Clinton, Sanders and Trump tipping a cold glass of tea while having a good belly laugh.

I know that's an exaggeration, but not much of one I'm sure. Both sides know it's part of keeping people under control by keeping peoples eye off the fact they are accomplishing nothing, while their respective fan's applaud their doing nothing.

Cool way to spend their time sipping tea instead of working to benefit us all and after the election is over, they do serve us all.

We should be in OK the election is over mode and now watching to see that they work together for our benefit. That's what they are elected for.

Have you ever had to have a tank set in the middle of winter?

What if there are 50 people that this guy refuses to fill, all need tanks.

So now you have a 2 week wait list, have fun with burst pipes, cracked dry wall and possible mold problems.

And if you are elderly it could kill you.

But your right, it is so simple, no biggy, right?

This guy is crazy. He's opening himself up to more lawsuits than customers. With his business license being revoked coming up too. Is he the sole services provider for the area? It's entirely possible. If the tank runs dry, how can he refill in freezing temperatures? There would be a fill test, a pressure test... all charged to the customer. Well, unless the customer was 92 and that was their primary heat source... then I guess the estate settles it.

As a younger person I remember in northern states I had lived in that disruption of services for nonpayment wasn't legal in the winter. Heck... we'd bank on it and make Christmas by not paying the power bill and then paying it off before April. I know, a checkered past and all that.

But crazy times and this guy is an asshat.

It's okay to create a situation where someone will die because they think differently than you.

But if you don't bake a cake, you lose your business.

How is this the same as the govt or community owning the means of production?

I think you are wrong, if you think the city won't attorney protect the citizenry of the community then you are incorrect. And if he won't, the the attorney general of the state can be called.

Just because he is a private business doesn't mean morals are allowed to go out the window.

No he can't. If there is an actionable offense, he will be sued. And if enough people bring suit, he will loose his business.

I would be more accurate to say:

Maine propane dealer won’t deliver to Trump voters–Giving 60% of customers to the competitor down the road

Except he did say he wouldn't leave anyone without fuel. He's saying that those of his customers that voted for Trump should find another seller he isn't outright refusing them, which I still think is wrong. I'm guessing you knew this and are just perpetuating the evil liberal meme.

Why can't the same excuse be used for bakers and cakes?

Public accomidation doesn't count for fuel?

You are correct, he is going to find himself in hot water.

I think Monday he will reconsider his stance.

Laws are what he can't ignore.

Morals do not have any legal weight. The city can't force him to deliver propane. If the city cares a lot it can purchase the fuel and deliver it themselves from a company that will deal with them. It isn't like he is the only propane company around.

Why are we so divided?

No mention of political leaning in the story.

How is it not political leaning?

This division is people treating others differently according to who they support and or voted for.

So, this isn't about a man being against Trump supporters due to his own convictions(Hillary supporter? Left leaning? etc.)? Okay, my bad thought that's what the story was about.

An owner of a propane dealership in Maine is refusing to deliver gas to anyone who voted for President-elect Donald Trump.

From your OP.

I lived in Minnesota, not far from International Falls, and heated with propane, so yeah, I get how serious having propane is. Enough so, that I probably wouldn't have ended up in any of the situations you're described, I can't imagine it likely any of my neighbors would have found themselves in any of those situations either And btw, unless I missed it, there isn't anything in the article about people that weren't able to secure an alternate source before ending up in the situations you describe either.

But your right, it is so simple, no biggy, right?

Not really what I said. But I am a conservative who believes that, with very few exceptions, businesses should do business with who they want. I also believe that nothing in the constitution protects us from inconvenience. And relative to sending soldiers over seas to fight and potentially die for our freedoms, free speech included among them, yeah I don't think having to change propane providers is such a big deal.

And I don't like weak whiny conservatives any better than I like weak whiny progressives.

It depends on the state and the laws regarding a protected class.

Trump supporters can fight to have themselves declared as a protected class, but the bills may not pass till way after his term is up.

No idea... from what I can tell he's a small dealer in a smallish area.

Where I live there is only one provider... there is no alternative.

If there was and this guy was competition, he would be out of business by spring... what if he decided next week to not fill tanks for people that liked the color red? Unreliable server.

For those on this thread that are justifying this... again, here is why you lost the general election and are continuing to lose power in the US.

Keep preaching it though!!!! All the time.. ALL THE TIME AND DO NOT SLEEP!!!!

Pointing out both sides are/have nuts in their ranks (with no proof) is minimizing his actions.

Hardly, it was just an afterthought. Proof of an opinion? I'm disgusted with the hate coming from both sides as would be the case with any rational person.

Not being partisan myself, it's easy for me to see the madness from both sides.

He is consumed by hate as are many from both sides. The politicians won on both sides by keeping the hate going and this clown fell for it. Lot's of people are falling for it.

Exactly, I feel the same here as a non partisan. People could die due to this nonsense from either side.

I recall this from earlier in the year,

Tow truck driver Ken Shupe of Shupee Max Towing refused to help a stranded motorist Monday, May 2 because she had a Bernie Sanders bumper sticker on her car.

Source

These cases are a reflection of being more divided than ever.

Exactly and I'm afraid that's exactly where the Parties want people to be, divided that is. If people ever get beyond this and learn to compromise, lot's of peoples political careers are over I think.

A lot is made of these individual cases it seems, but for the most part I think more and more are waking up to how they are being manipulated.

Thanks for understanding the message. IMO it's used to quell the people from focusing too much on the bigger picture (those responsible for what's really going on, etc.) but are rather focused on themselves.
