Some outlets and articles are manifestly false, and are deserved of the narrowly-defined term "fake news", but the broader usage of the term as it has been applied on Propornot (promulgated by the Washington Post) and other lists, proves it is used to go beyond the narrow definition in order to slander sites like Wikileaks and Drudge Report as Russian propaganda.

Propornot might be dismissed as a mistake, but the speed with which it spread, even among respectable journalists, is troubling. With Clinton denouncing fake news as risking lives, the knee-jerk response by supposedly rational people has been breathtaking, especially since "fake news" has had little to no impact on anything save for a few facebook shares among the credulous. According to Buzzfeed, the top fake news stories outperformed the top real news stories in social media engagement, but there is no way fake news outlets outperformed real news outlets in total. These stories were stupid one-offs, small drops in a very big pond, and not worth the hysteria, the air-time, and the righteous indignation.

So in one post, it's "the right".

Then in another post it's "ats members".

So which one is "fake" ?

November 9th, 2016 was the dawn of the age of confusion.

Yes, ATS members on the Right have said they would support stomping the constitution in to the dirt.

I know you may be confused, but that is nothing new.

Quite a few. Here's one as an example.

If we actually believe all men were created equal, what's with the left the right the dems the repubs?

It seems everybody's idea of the American dream is to gain them self an ivory tower so that other equal American dreamers can serve under them?

There's not a soul on this planet more- or -less valuable than mine, or anyone else's?

A little bit of self reflection goes a long way?

Nobody seems to care about unity, let alone what it actually means- looking at it from my perspective.

Sorry, I ain't trying to hurt people's feelings-

Fake news was enabled by the passage of the NDAA.

What was the purpose of its passage?

I can agree that NDAA had an effect in enabling false stories. However, the concentration of ownership of msm in six companies is also a factor. Six companies that exist to sell you something after they've proved to you that you are somehow inadequate if you don't purchase their snake oil.

If Trump and the Republican Congress have the will to do something about the monopolies we're seeing in msm (media and communications), BigAg (food production & distribution) and Big Box operations (consumer product sales & distribution), we might see some real changes come as Making American Great Again progresses. It's way past time to "Bust some Trusts" in the spirit of Teddy.

I'm continually entertained by people who deride alternative news sites for "selling their books or potions." I hear it a lot from those who want to attack Alex Jones. It's as if they get some form of msm that doesn't include selling stuff---stuff that requires a lengthy legal warning---stuff that can kill you or make you go cat-whisker crazy---stuff that will cause serious health deteriorations. Somehow it's oh so wrong for owners of alternative media sites to be capitalists but corporate media is a different kettle of fish.

What is fake news? All this hype about fake news and some vague attempt to stop it. It's the hand of the wizard that he's showing you----what we need to be looking at is the other hand.

We do not need to censor "fake news". We just need to inform people so that they are aware of it.

What's funny though, is the calls from people on the Right for the FCC to get involved and revoke the licences of media outlets like CNN, MSNBC and such.

It is dishonest for anyone to say that the Left is the problem here, when the Right is engaging in the same push for censorship and violation of the 1st amendment.

I think all news should be allowed, and it's up to the reader to verify it's factual base. But when the MSM, (the main ones) are spreading bull#, it has a serious effect on the population as a whole. Most people aren't involved enough to vet their news, they just accept what they are told. So even though we at ATS might see through some garbage, most won't.

In that light, the MSM should be held to a higher standard and as of late, they are doing the exact thing they claim to be against.

how to police that, I have no idea.

Agreed.

Sadly, "fake news" is also freedom of speech.

This whole Russia hacked the election BS, is a prime example of the MSM spreading a "fake news" story.

A wonderful OP and kudos to Sharyl as well.. she's a fighter. Bumped.

To take this to the logical extent of codifying it-- we should
reinstate the Smith-Mundt Act: and make fake news as illegal
as the progs want. Oh wait, just anything other than our
POV? I'm not confused. Happy Holidays, and wear something
nice on Jan. 20. I'm saving a raven tie tac just for the Don.

I'm also not too worried about the traction Jake Clapper gave
to the Electoral College, in that :
+the intel community is NOT going to give anyone hacking de-
tails (maybe because the acts can't be legally verified whoda thunk)
*and in the same breath of paragraph telling us all that Russia
influenced our electoral process. The dissonance from even the
czar of the 17 is screaming the NWO's divisive attitude.

I know that last pop in the chin was maybe off-topic-- or was it?
Fake news has a really prominent half-sister called fake intel.
I think the concept in any small form of the government believing
it can lie to us, along with the media in any extra role is infuriating.

People were lynched in this country 150 years ago for this. How we
have become so tolerant is a major reason we're still here.. if
anybody can get me a viable source of where it is we got herded.

Just here to add that Sharyl Attkison is one of the few journalist I respect on go to frequently. I have posted 2-3 posts regarding her ordeal with CBS. Glad to see this thread move up. She deserves much credit for her work.

Come on guys. Do we really need these people to explain it to us? Does anyone know of an unbiased news channel? Maybe it is time to promote local news anchors to a national level. They are at least more unbiased than the national news. For the most part they do not at least show bias while they report something. They usually let the viewer make up their own mind. Anyone else have a solution to this problem. The only news organizations that are crying about it the most are the biased ones.

"Fake News" doesn't refer to a difference in opinion or a slant/bias/spin/lean/whatever — it refers to complete fabrications — i.e., s# that never happened.

Take the "fakes news" story, Pope Francies Endorses Donald Trump For President for instance.

THAT S# DIDN'T HAPPEN.

How much more clear can this be made? That's a hoax. Call it "hoax news" if "fake news" triggers you. It's not "alternative journalism" or "indepedent journalism" — it's complete fabrication.

While the term "fake news" might be trendy now, what it refers to didn't just pop into existence after the election. You're not doing anyone any favors by conflating the two and pushing denial.

In fact, let's get real here. There is a denial agenda being promoted by the fringe-right to keep people hooked on hoaxes.

or you know the story that benghazi was due to a cartoon. you have to be extremely niave to think its only a problem on one side. both sides do it the problem is liberals have 4 out of 5 media outlets under their control so when they yell in unison people seem to think that it holds more weight when in reality its all the same voice.

no local news anchors just parrot what the AP feeds them. the entire org from top to bottom is controlled and has been for decades. this is nothing new and if people kept there eyes ears and brains working theyd see it for what it is.

When you have a large segment of the media that blatantly and repeated lies and exaggerates to attack half of the country and turn people against them then fake news is a true crisis.

Maybe we need some kind of rating system for media like we have for food or video games, so people can see if an organization is credible, reliable, or trustworthy. Of course most conservatives would probably still go for the lowest quality propaganda anyways unfortunately.

id argue we have an education problem when so many people are so easily manipulated. its funny how u say conservatives at the end when u have liberals going crazy over things like the BLM (soros funded), freaking out over a fake claim that russia lost them the election, or was it drudge, fox news, etc. thats low level propaganda right there that only takes a couple mins of fact checking to be able to see how they are 100% from the truth.

I agree they only read it. But they do it unbiased. They do not push their view on you, for most of the time. CNN, MSNBC, FOX, ect, all of the National News are biased one way or another. They spin all stories.

maybe your local stations are different then mine then cause they pretty much are right inline with the national media in my area. oh and its not just national, its global. remember when russia attacked georgia a few years back? all english newspapers put up the headline within mins of each other worldwide saying georgia attacks russia. then the article goes on to explain how russia fired on the georgian tanks and the tanks fired back. well that headline is 180 degrees from the truth but it showed how the world media is all working together.

Facepalm. Of course they work together, your local TV station doesn't have the money to have reporters all over the world every day. Of course they have to have centralized collection points (Reuters, AP) to collect news from all over and make it available to everyone else.

It's not a conspiracy, it's real life. Just like the car companies get parts from a centralized source (e.g. Bosch) because it would be too expensive for them all to do it themselves.
