The river was slow and silent,
wrapped in a soft fog
that lay like a downy comforter.
Even the ducks and geese
respected the quiet,
as they lazily paddled about.
Male and female they paired,
still groggy from their sleep,
they appeared to not care.
The rocky shoreline
was covered in white,
a frosting of snow on each boulder.
The current seemed to have
no real impact on them,
they slipped easily through the swirls.
I wondered about this couple,
had they been together long,
were they parents yet?
I saw the man approaching,
with binoculars hanging
around his turtle neck sweater.
We exchanged greetings
and passed by each other,
choosing to remain strangers.
Soon his tread was lost to my ear
and I was alone again,
walking along the river...quiet.
