Its psychological. Scream commands at a human and the "shock and awe" tends to create compliance. Loud, single syllable words work best.

But when they immediately start with that, its more escalating than not. There's a few good cops that don't need to yell contradicting commands and "show their force" in order to lets say handle a small time possession charge OR A 73 YEAR OLD WITH DEMENTIA. Can you honestly say the best way to handle a senior citizen (especially with dementia) is to randomly point guns at him while screaming. He was probably so scared and confused he froze. Why couldn't they just walk up to him OR HOW ABOUT CALL AN AMBULANCE. Cops are the biggest thugs in the country.

I don't disagree with you. I just understand the mindset that brings overwhelming force down on any situation where stress is felt.

Im really more interested in seeing policing improved by reducing their workload. Way too many laws have created way too many criminals for no reason other than social whim in most cases. A good example is Texas knife law, enacted in response to some mass hysteria in the 20's or 30's relating to stabbings or something. A tempest in a teapot restricted all of us for all time.

I think we should be smarter about laws. Its not action/reaction. We should learn from our mistakes. For example....the war on drugs has created a black market that we know fuels the money behind an overwhelming majority of organized crime. Meanwhile, resources that could be spent looking into human trafficking, murder, rape, etc are spent chasing down petty criminals selling their drugs on street corners. The same street corners that create shootouts in turf wars. Owning your corner is the hustle, right?

Meanwhile you have police who are nothing more than minimum wage employees being exposed to enormous amounts of cash. How do we expect that to work out for us? To fight what you call crime....you cannot become what you call a criminal.

And to top it all off....this whole drug war is essentially the CIA vs law enforcement. The CIA has left fingerprints all over the drug trade, along with the DEA. There was a plane registered to the CIA found in the Gulf loaded with Columbian Gold. Among dozens of others incidents.

And people actually support this.

Yes I agree with all that you said. they think about theirs and others past situations and expect the worse but they should be trained to analyze the situation without bias.
& there are more laws that exist strictly to make the government money its not right and causes the police to go out with a mindset hoping they come across someone breaking even the smallest law so they can arrest or issue a citation. Its no longer about protecting and serving the citizens. Its more about their bottom line and prejudices towards certain activities and people. Its sad and there needs to be a new approach to training officers and their policing in general.

The point you made about law training...

An officer only needs to be trained in law well enough to ensure that he or she does not break it whilst about their duties.

Other than that, there is no reason for an officer to have extensive knowledge of law, because they are not responsible for deciding cases, defending or prosecuting them. Their job is to arrest people involved with an incident, connect suspects to crimes which have occurred, and offer them up, suspect, evidence and all, to the prosecution, whose task it then is, to make the legal case against the suspect, or elect to drop any charges made against the defendant/suspect.
