Washington is the first state to sue Monsanto Co., claiming the agrochemical giant knowingly marketed and sold PCBs, despite company awareness that the chemicals were toxic and carcinogenic.

The lawsuit was announced in a joint press conference with Attorney General Bob Ferguson and Governor Jay Inslee.

PCBs were used for decades to insulate and cool electrical equipment. Monsanto was the only producer.

Washington state sues Monsanto over PCB pollution

Prior to this current lawsuit, In January 2016, Seattle was the sixth city in the Western US to seek damages from Monsanto, following Spokane, San Jose, Oakland, San Diego and Berkley. See more here

Good for this, it's about time they are held responsible for pollution with PCBs as a start. Also, no that's not to dismiss other agribusiness companies who pollute.

"For too long the company escaped responsibility for the costs, the enormous costs of the clean-up of this material,” Inslee said. “They've left the state and counties and cities and private entities to foot the bill.”

GMO-free food for thought

This has nothing to do with GMOs. Which thousands of independent studies have proven safe. That's independent of Monsanto, or any other scapegoat for the science illiterate.

This has everything to do with chemical pollution that Monsanto needs to own up to.

I wish them luck with this... but I wont hold my breath, a few people in a state going up against that company and all the people they own to try and bring justice... just dont see it happening.

Right. At the end of every GMO discussion is CHEMISTRY. What if any chemical differences are there between heirloom soy and GMO soy? What 'carcinogen' is in the GMO that wasn't before?? Good luck with that.

That's not to say they aren't some shady practice heathens.

Didn't know this tidbit about PCB's. Interesting!

It's PCB cleanup not GMOs/Roundup in particular, but I have looked into Trump's position on GMO and anyone feel free to add-not to be OT but for anyone else wondering that comes along.

(reply didn't work)

With varied partisan having talking of this, some had painted his pro Monsanto view polar opposites compared to the seemingly Anti Monsato Hillary(pandering anyway). Such as this source for an example.

Another source, shares,
"Is Donald Trump Plotting to Take Down Monsanto?"
About an intern retweeting a message that came out against Monsanto: see here.

Yet another, a pro organics site replies about Trump:

It's tempting to think that all your energy, your money, your time, was wasted. But your support for GMO labeling initiatives, in California last year, and in Washington State this year, has propelled GMO labeling onto the national stage.

You are the reason Rachel Maddow and Stephen Colbert, the New York Times and the Guardian, are talking and writing about GMOs.

Your commitment, your passion, have forced Monsanto and Big Food to cough up millions of dollars to fight you. You've dented their wallets. You've cracked their foundations.
Source

One thing is for sure Trump picked Sen. Jeff Sessons:

Donald Trump's election win and his pick for attorney general could be a big boost to Bayer AG's $66 billion purchase of Monsanto Co. that is currently undergoing state and federal antitrust investigations.

The issue overall:

"Farmers get paid less for their crops, more pesticides are used and there are fewer options for consumers at the grocery store," Wenonah Hauter, the executive director of Food & Water Watch, told EcoWatch after Bayer and Monsanto announced acquisition plans in September.

Source
Whether that becomes a determining factor is not known but can be concluded so far as a concerning issue. It may also be up to his supporters with being vocal to him about his choice considering they do not align with Monsato.

Gene expression is what we're talking about here. There is no chemical difference between a GMO soy bean and an heirloom soybean.

Everything you eat has been modified.

Some foods way worse than GMO.

How does plants being blasted by radiation to create mutations sound??

Oh no, not chemistry!

That means chemicals!

PCB's have NOTHING to do with food or plants or GMO whatsoever.

The lawsuit has nothing to do with that either.

So why are you deflecting by bringing things like GMO soy up?

There are many reasons you might want to modify foods.

Drought resistance, increased nutritional values, production of vitamins that would otherwise not be present(golden rice and beta carotene for example), cold resistance, resistance to harmful radiation(food for Mars astronauts).

GMOs are only scary if you know nothing about them or have never read any peer reviewed paper explaining what they do, how they are modified, and their safety. Of which there are thousands.

Ok, perhaps they didnt but perhaps they are and not telling us?

I'm posting this because it's there.

Do you think it's remotely possible they aren't telling us what they're doing to our food chain though? I mean, anything is possible right?

Sorry buddy I'll stick to organic whenever possible. You can be the guinea pig.
Btw, you sound like a mouthpiece for big agri, not sayin you are, but just letting you know how you come off to anyone reading these boards.
And please, if you have a credible source claiming gmo's are healthier than organic you need to link that. That would be some good reading.

I am aware of the "study" that claimed GMOs caused that cancer.

What you aren't aware of is that particular species of rat is prone to tumor growth and the study itself did not have a control group.

A subsequent study revealed that the results were doctored and the original study was never peer reviewed before the results were released to the public.

I posted a link to the genetic literacy project. They have a database of every study ever done on GMO foods.

Might be a good idea to at least peruse the abstracts of those studies.
