This might reverberate and send another one towards Ferndale, with Hawaii in the middle. Duck Hawaii.

This is an aftershock of the 7.8, not at all unusual for this area.

The Quake Watch thread is an excellent resource and has some of the best earthquake watchers anywhere on the net.

If there were anything to be concerned over, there would be posts there as well as separate threads pertaining to whatever activity which might be cause for concern.

Granted, we might only get a few minutes notice, but there are people watching the live data feeds of several seismic networks who are located across the world.

When does it stop being an after shock and become a different EQ? Never did understand how come they just assume these are all aftershocks.

Aftershocks are earthquakes that follow the largest shock of an earthquake sequence. They are smaller than the mainshock and within 1-2 rupture lengths distance from the mainshock. Aftershocks can continue over a period of weeks, months, or years.

USGS

Large enough quakes (the NMSZ quakes in 1811/1812, the Great Tohoku quake of 2011) can have aftershocks for decades after the fact.

Some quakes don't produce aftershocks at all or have very minimal ones.

The 7.8 that happened in the Solomon Isles will likely produce them for months if not years.

In order to be considered a new main shock, any quake in this particular area would have to be greather than 6.7 or so.

So, 1 EQ and 33 aftershocks? Got it, my mistake.

There're likely to be hundreds, if not thousands of aftershocks from a quake of this size.

In fact, if you map them, you can get an idea of the fracture zone.

Nailed this green circle, too.

Earthquake measuring 6.9 strikes off Solomon Islands - USGS
An earthquake of magnitude 6.9 struck early on Saturday off the Solomon Islands, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The quake had a depth of 10 km (6 miles) and its epicentre was 89 km west of Kira Kira. There was no immediate tsunami threat, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said. A 7.8 quake hit the remote South Pacific islands early on Friday, sending residents into the hills and triggering powerful aftershocks. (Reuters)

Is it me, or is the Eastern side of the Ring of Fire waking up? Mexico has been having many quakes as well, esp. in the Oaxaca region.

Is the 6.8 quake off the West Coast the other day an indication of the San Andreas waking up, or the Cascadia Subduction Zone, which would supposedly have a larger quake than the other?

Can earthquakes be predicted, and if so, are there any websites with reliable information on this?

I enjoy studying earthquake stats but have much to learn.

Hit both of these circles.

I am batting 1000. Check out all my predictive circles in this thread.
