AT least three people were brutally assaulted, including a woman in her 70's, as they were attempting to mark the death of former Chinese leader Zhao Ziyang. Ziyang, who died last week, is best remembered for his opposition to the 1989 military crackdown on the Tienanmen democracy movement.

BEIJING (AFP) - China has detained dozens of people, some of whom have been severely beaten, for trying to mark the death of former leader Zhao Ziyang, witnesses said.

The allegations came as the government intensified security to prevent mourners attending Saturday's funeral in Beijing for Zhao, the former Communist Party secretary general purged for opposing the 1989 military crackdown on the Tienanmen democracy movement.

At least three people, including a woman in her 70s, were punched and manhandled by police officers outside the government offices which receive complaints in the Chinese capital, witnesses said.

Well what exactly do we expect from the Chinese communist government? It makes it all the more sickening to hear that the E.U. wants to life the arms embargo. If they did not want people to mourn his passing, why the funeral at all? Why not just dump the body somewhere as they have done with countless thousands of dissidents?
