A Virginia high school has banned “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” because they use racial slurs.

The move comes after the mother of a biracial student at a Virginia school complained about the use of the n-word in the literature classics.

“I keep hearing, ‘this is a classic, this is a classic,’” said Rothstein-Williams, the white mother. “I understand this is a literature classic but at some point, I feel the children will not or do not truly get the classic part, the literature part – which I’m not disputing this is great literature. But there are so many racial slurs in there and offensive wording that you can’t get past that.”

I fear for history. I fear for literature. For free expression.

History will be whitewashed better than the fence Tom Sawyer worked on. (to understand the reference, read the book)

You cannot censor/ban something just because you find it offensive.

I don't know how clear I can make it.

I wonder if they have a problem with the movie White Girls.

I'm sure Roots is still ok however but not Shindlers List

How sad that they would ban a 1960's historic amazing book. Thank you for this thread.

And they wonder why kids can't deal with reality when they grow up....

Safe spaces, partipation trophies, etc
We aren't teaching them about the world....we are building false narratives.

Very troubling. The racial slurs were used to paint a picture of the times, not to paint groups with offensive epithets. Ironically, this is a whitewash of history, not to mention censorship of classic literature.

It would be civil war 2.0 if someone flipped the script on that one.

If it is offensive to you, don't read it.

But to deny it to others is authoritarian.

I ask not to be rude...just to see where you are coming from.

How old are you?

I fully supported the Classics - - - until I ran into a personal issue. (I feel like Dr. Spock and his personal experience with his acquired teen aged step-daughter)

Personal experience can change the mind of even the most Open of an Open Mind.

This was a Hardy Boys book.

I was reading it to my 8 year old boy.

When it got to "house boy", "slave", and the "n-word" - - - I moved to a different book.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

His best friends are black, Chinese, Native American, and Egyptian. He, for some unknown reason, gravitates toward "people of color".

He has told us his real name is not what we gave him, but from before he was born. Who knows?

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyway, I have changed my mind on this because of personal experience.

I now support "modified Classics" for school age children. Probably even through high school.

it's one friggin highschool, not a whitewash of history. when religious high schools which contain hundreds of thousands of students, stop talking about god, the devil and angels being real, i'll listen.

I agree with you.

Kids are very impressionable.

They do not need this kind of stuff in their reading material.

The books can be modernized.

Censorship is a denial of freedom of expression.

Well, I can't say I'm surprised by those who endorse and want to promote censorship.

And Freedom of Expression does have limits.
