Steps to cement a de facto truce accelerated on the ground as Palestinian security men began deploying in south Gaza to stamp out lingering, isolated gunfire by militants. Quiet has prevailed in north Gaza since a similar deployment last week.
But the calm was fragile, underlined by a threat from the militant al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades to resume attacks if Israel did not halt raids to seize wanted gunmen within 24 hours.
Israeli occupation soldiers have shot and killed a three-year-old girl inside her home in central Gaza, eyewitnesses and medical sources said.
Rahma Ibrahim Abu Shamas was reportedly inside her home in Dair al-Balah in central Gaza on Wednesday when a bullet struck her in the head, killing her instantly.
An Israeli army spokesman acknowledged the killings, saying the army was looking into the "incident".
The spokesman said soldiers thought that Palestinian resistance activists were present in the neighbourhood.
