SaturnFX, it's really easy. Every so often a focus group in the UK says that children are being exposed (ie, can look and find) harcore porn on the internet and slams the government of the day to introduce a way to stop the loophole that allows a child to do online what they cannot do in the 'real' world. The government of the day will then come up with a message to say how they will stop this happening. And then, nothing happens.

If a site which is there purely and simply to share porn has to put some kind of gateway in place to show that the viewers of said material are of the appropriate age in their country/region to view it, is that really a big deal? I don't know, you tell me.

Has that anything to do with twitter? Is the primary purpose of Twitter to distribute porn? I'm going to have a wild stab and say no. Should what would usually be defined by a reasonable person (don't ask me for a definition, did I say I was a lawyer?) as porn be distributed on Twitter, should that material be blocked? You tell me, is that censorship by Twitter, or complying with its own T's and C's?

If Trump puts in place further restrictions on women choosing to have an abortion, should clinics offering that service in America be censored so people don't know they exist? I know my opinion, but I'm also sure there are people on ATS that think yes, they should be censored.

Police state Britain, but I have to say something should have been done about the Porn a long time ago however it is really just an excuse to implement more stringent and draconian control of the public and suppress there free speech.

Don't get comfortable. when this comes up, be it yearly or at the start of new governments, even if its all just words, people need to stand against such measures.
one day it may be more than just words if that's all you are saying it is today. Boy who cried wolf comes to mind..eventually the wolf did get the boy

Yes, the only way to do that is to identify who the person is to begin with..aka, removing anonymity from people

there is no rule against adult material on twitter.
the primary purpose on twitter is to allow people to distribute whatever they damn well please (unless it is clearly illegal by US standards). Twitter has a mountain of porn, all of which is perfectly fine within the terms and services of twitter. Is twitter a adult website? parts of it is, sure, because adults use the website. same with most social media.
and the big draw for many on social media is the anonymous aspect of it all...if you have to identify yourself, you wont use the service in the same way...a bit like here on ATS..imagine if you couldn't be anonymous. Imagine if you had to have your information copied and held by the ATS administration. How many people on this board would be silenced for fear of persecution in sharing something they figure is classified or a secret

If Trump puts in place

This isn't about Trump. not even the same country.

I have to say something should have been done about the Porn a long time ago

Just wondering. why?
a bit off topic, but this conversation always confuses me.

porn will make a person a sexist/misogynist in the same way violent media will make someone a murderer/bully.

aka, it may trigger traits in a person already there (parents are often the issue here / poor upbringing), but it doesn't turn people into anything.

What it does do it turn the whole concept of sexual intercourse between people into something considered to be bad. This in turn causes more psychological turmoil than if it was considered just a natural thing adults do

I am not saying kids should have access to porn, I am saying the bigger issue in my mind is the complete normalization of violence to kids and sex/love of another is bad. this is reverse land.

So, back to the question
Why? why should something have been done about it long ago?
And whats your views on violence in media and entertainment?

Well here we go. How to make something sound sinister, when it is not!

The Digital Economy Bill 2016/17 is at Third Reading stage and one the verge of being passed to the House of Lords. What revisions are further made is therefore unknown.

On pornography, the Bill puts a requirement on porno websites to display verification and sets up the mechanics to manage such a requirement. These verifications already exist on some sites, like Reddit. The definitiaion of pornography is well defined and this is detailed in the proposed Bill. Nothing in the Bill about websites being blocked.

Parliamentary business

What's the problem?

Right, your brain produces chemical's called Enforphines which are most similar in effect to heroin or cocain, now they produce a natural pleasure reward system which we may call instinctive lust and this is why that pretty woman in the skin tight dress with the nice figure and shaved leg's send's our heart rate's up (Well mine anyway), now also this is why when we come down after doing the nasty with her if we are so lucky that we suddenly feel terrible and half hungover, your brain has been hoodwinked into controlling you to pass on your dna by this point so for a moment reason return's with a big grey bang.

Now when we watch porn we are tricking our mind's at a very low level into thinking we are near to or having sex, now this in turn caused the whole endorphine rush and related high with the un rational part of our personality taking control, guess what it is also just as addictive as heroin or cocain?.

Side effect's, long term personality damage, youngsters can become withdrawn and hide away in there room so that there parent's do not know what they are watching etc and this lead's to relationship problem's, social withdrawel and other related issue's.

Also of note it lead's to some few weak willed and low intelligence individual's losing there inhibition's having watched there fantasy in 2D and they can no longer get the initial kick so like a drug addict they have to up the ante and even carry out there fantasy in the real world, not too harmful if you live in a certain suburb of amsterdam perhaps but otherwise very dangerous to other people and themselves (especially if they have a perverse fantasy about how to use long uncut salami sausages in a very inappropriate manner (let's leave chicken's and duck tape out of this one - yeah we all saw that film in our mate's when we were about 14 or so), joking aside you know what I mean there are all kind's of progressively darker and darker porn even on freely available site's on the normal net nevermind the dark web with it's network's of pedo's and other pervert's.

So Porn is harmful if abused, in small doses and not as a substitute for relationship it is fine I supposed but then whom would really want to watch it if they already have a lover?.

Also it is an exploitative industry, how many horror story's about young woman being roped into that world, how many gangsters and other scum are getting rich every time someone click's a link so even if they don't pay the advertisers do?, and how many of these people in this industry are low intelligence but wake up one day and realize they were used and there lives stolen from them, I for one do not want to pay those that do this to them by clicking on there site's and have even blocked them at my ISP level but only them as I do want free speech safe guarded, something Theresa may it seem's is intend upon attacking under the guise of anti terror legislation.

There have been many studies done on this particular theme in those countries where porn is legalized and is still legal (I'm to Pi**-Ar*** to look for them you look for yourself) and the whole cause and effect does not even come into the ballpark.
It's all about education, being open about sexuality, not hiding it like it's something dirty, that's the problem.
Now I'm not talking about the nasty side, child porn etc. (those people aught to be rooted out and severely punished) but run of the mill consensual acts (if you think just that's dirty then you've had a very puritanical upbringing) it's what it is a sexual act.
Now actually think what the net is about? It's about a person sitting in their home typing on a keyboard (whether anonymous or not) so just tell me how can anybody police this activity, apart from being there in person. How many children have pretended to be adults and no-one knows? Ok, put blocks and checks but who knows whos tapping the keys, an adult or a child. Now one reason they give is tracing through credit card details, but the majority of porn on the net is free so that excuse is a no go. This is ALL about censorship pure and simple and as what's been said "who decides what's to be censored and what's not". A very, very slippery slope indeed.

You aren't really that anonymous on ATS. The IP address you post from could (in theory) easily be found. If you choose to use all manner of VPN's to hide that then either you are very paranoid or you have some reason to hide who you are. Don't fool yourself. How much material posted on ATS is really classified or a secret - your words, seeing as most if not all shared on here that some would consider as such comes from another source and a link is provided?

VPN

That's the point. paranoia or have something to hide are 2 firm and legit reasons to not be tracked.
Biggest user of VPN, china. They need it just to get access to most of the web to begin with. if found, they could face imprisonment.
If Julian Assange was US Based, no doubt he wouldn't be using his real name or IP.
VPNs also unlock different results. If I use my VPN and relocate it to say, Japan for my location, even google gives different results...much less changing it to Russia or other places. VPNs are fantastic

No clue..its not like some official is going to come on here and scream for everyone to stop reading as its classified.

correct

Bingo
China does it btw.
one step down the road to the great European firewall and mass blocking of social media...for protection and security or some such.

A very, very slippery slope indeed.

Its a cliff

You are really making this out to be a bigger deal than it actually is. I'm surprised as you were extremely critical of Trumps video of his intentions for his first day in office which would mean placing firewalls...... very strange. This is a message of appeasement to people who don't want their kids to see porn - it always has been.

Would you be happy for your children to be watching porn then...

Kids grow up far to fast as it is. they don't need to see this stuff at an early age.. get a grip..

question all things, try and figure out where they are going for it.

always be wary of people trying to clamp down liberties while saying it is for security..and such things will always have the clarion call of "for the kids" in order to deflect any criticism...as it always has been.

I see this as a potential, if passed, to be extremely dangerous for freedom of speech. I am surprised you don't see it.

I'm not as paranoid as you, but then my country didn't just vote in someone anti pro choice, anti gay marriage and as he seems to be in the Church's pocket I'm sure at some point he will also be anti porn - unless there is a profit in it for him or anyone in his family.

The real response though? This is nothing new. If - and that's a big if - I wanted to view porn and had to show some credentials that prove I'm of the legal age to do so in the country where I live, then fine, big deal. As it happens it's not something I'm overly concerned about. You are turning that into being about Twitter and other websites, that's your twist on what was actually said. To be quite honest though, maybe there is an argument that not being anonymous on Twitter would mean people didn't think they could get away with acting like a total prick because no one could know who they are, or they could get sued for slander - I really wouldn't know, I don't use Twitter.

"child friendly" "protect the children"

Isn't that the job of the parents? To make that decision?

Just when I think my disillusionment with society/politicians in general can't get any worse...along they come again.

Even the big meteor is disappointing me...

So just stop showing your ISP how and to what you connect, it is not that hard these days.

Blocking at ISP levels is still a whole other realm them the great Chinese firewall
