Here is what we should consider:
The football and the Bisket have been around since Eisenhower and modified through out the years. Various presidents, since the advent of the nuclear
age have had to weigh heavily the use of such weapons and the options that go along with it. With far more countries having nuclear weapons, the use
is something that is usually relegated to a weapon of last resort, and never the first option on the table.
First of all there is no button that the president pushes, but the command codes to authorize the use of nuclear weapons are only in the hands of the
president, and his alone. Not even a general can authorize its use, only the sitting president has that authority. Though it does require that there
is a second peson namely, the Secretary of Defense to confirm the actual launch of a nuclear weapon, though it should be noted, that the Secretary
does not have the legal authority to veto the use, only approve or disapprove of its use.
What the Football is, and why it is important, it is a case, that is leather bound, that contains, some of the codes, the main codes being in an
envelope that is on him 24/7, which is the bisket, a few manuals, a list of options and a secure communications device.
In the event of a nuclear strike on the country, the president has a max of 4 to 8 minutes to make a decision to either launch or not launch a counter
strike. If the reports are true, on some of the weapons that either are in development or have been developed, it could be about 2 to 4 minutes to
make a decision.
If the President decides to launch, then he has to open the bisket and the football, look at the options, and then send the authorization to the
commanders who will then carry out his instructions, including the kind of response and location.
Why is the football and the bisket so important, well it is a list and location of every nuclear weapon the USA has in its arsenal and the launch
codes, hence why we should be a bit worried about such.
