Yes but only if you are using a natural source of fire not very handy. Someone had to invent a fire starting device be it rubbing two sticks together or whatever to make a fire so man didnt have to wait for a natural forest fire to cook a meal.

The tool to create fire was the important invention not the discovery of fire itself. Its just like a Zippo you wouldnt call that a discover its a invention and serves the same basic function.

I'd say a brain that could think, use logic, and have common sense. Without that we would be nothing more then weak gorillas. Think about it, no spoken word, no written word, no nothing if we did not have a brain that could create, think, use logic. Well, that and have to go with technology, of any sorts, from wheel to tv to space shuttle to computer. Imagine a world with out technology of ANY kind...

The blade. If it were not for this early tool man would still be stuck in the tree. Runners up include fire, language, pulley, and paved roads.

Well this is a very personal one from my standpoint, but Audio recording and playback devices (be it Vinyl, CDs, MP3s, etc). Music is such an integral part of my life (there is *always* some form of music playing wherever I go, and whenever I work), that for me personally, it's those things.

Sure they depend on a host of other inventions, but without the ability to have music as freely available (in terms of portability, etc.) my life would not be nearly as fulfilling on a personal level.

From a gee-goly-whiz invention perspective it's the transistor. Runner ups: Airplanes, the first pump.

From a partical down to earth perspective, I would guess non-verbal communications (i.e. writing be it words or symbols). Runner ups: The Wheel (tm), and Boats (boats were and to some extent still are vital for regional/global trade). I'd also like to give a shout out to the zipper.

Discoveries, fire for the first couple million years, and for the last 100 electricity (electricity, it's the new fire.. don't believe me, go try an electric stove or microwave).

Most important future discovery: true understanding of gravitational forces and how they operate, so we can control them and unify the phsyics loop.

Most important invention if you asked this question in 50 years: Fusion power plants. (I know it's been invented already, but soon (hopefully) we will wonder how we lived with them).

Best discovery/invention used in the worst possible way: Automic Theory --> H-Bombs. Runners up: explosives-->munitions and written word --> tabloids.

Most misused, under utilized invention ever: The Internet: 99% crap, 1% decent content (note porn, although enjoyable is in the crap bucket and accounts for 94% of the total).

I think that covers my list of notable notables.

Teslas Transmitter, its not operational now, it never was, but it would have worked.. The entire world could have benifited from free electricity world wide, wirelessly, fifty years ago, if it wasn't taken down..... Amagine where'd we'd be today if we had that device.

lol, porn has its (very small) place in society, although 94% of the internet being used for it is blatant abuse, i agree. i use the net to make my quality of living higher, but i still dont even come close to my potential.

How 'bout religion? The influence on society alone makes it a top 10 invention, right?

Well at least once person got the humor I was going for with that statement
..

Seriously, the Internet is really mis-used. It has given mankind the ability to communicate in a nearly telepathic fashion. In most of the world access is ludacrisly cheap, while allowing equal access (generally). It's an almost utopian communication mechanism that has been soured by the few.

Never before has anyone had the ability to communicate their entire ideas so cheaply. By that I mean not just words like you can on the phone or telegraph, or pictures and words like you can with a printing press, but moving pictures, animation, supporting data, spoken story lines and music, all in one communication pipeline... and yet we very rarely use it how it could be used

THe greatest invention has to be the creation of the Catholic Church. THink about it, it controlled europe over centuries. To this day it has embassies in every country, and heads of state consult the pope frequently. It also has a massive amount of wealth. 3 billion people in this world are Christian. Most if them are catholics

Glass.

Glass has to be one of the most important inventions in Humanitys history. SO many other inventions listed here stem from, or are impossible without the use of Glass.

Gun Powder is my pick. The chain of inventions that followed from it's inception has shaped the life of modern man as we know it. From the canon, to the colt 45, to manned missions to the moon...it all stems from gun powder.
