Why are question marks and other symbols not displayed in thread link titles?

...seriously this is inducing way too many brain farts while trying to make sense of thread titles. Is there some specific reason?

I think it was done to prevent Hashtag clickbait.

that's why i denoted it as "thread link" titles, they appear in the treads themselves, but not the links.

I really don't care so much about the other symbols as much as the "
".

Usually, special characters are escaped from input fields to prevent hacking. In this case I'm assuming it helps with the search function as well.

I could be wrong, but it could be a coding issue that they are specifically being ignored. Some symbols are an inherent part of php, asp, ruby that may make them difficult (internally) to manage if they were left as the text string in a title.

Also, it could open up the title to having emoticons and emojis in them and I think the general concensus is we don't want to see that.

I remember a discussion, somewhere in the back of my mind, that far too many !!!!!!!!'s and ?!?!?!?!?!'s were being used in titles.

ok, screw the other symbols, I'm really just advocating for one, the almighty 'question mark'.

So for the sake of articulate communication, mods, managers, Skeptic, could you please make an exeption for this one awesome caracter? (see what I did there)

Here's an answer (recent) that isn't really an answer but, is.

I'm sure it's the most they could give, at least it was addressed...sort of.

Ok...I put an ATS link in my reply above. The actual linked page has a
...but only appears once you click it.*
*(The post I linked TO is irrelevant, it just had a question mark in it)

Send a PM to Springer or S.O....they will respond to you.....Good Luck

Punctuation was removed from the thread lists by SkepticOverlord for a very good reason. He hasn't chosen to make a BBQ thread about it and that's entirely his decision. It was done with good intentions.

It's ATS so I don't expect you to trust the vague explanation. All I can say is it was done for the best of reasons and not to annoy or frustrate members. I count myself as one of you who find it irksome and hope it isn't a long-lived feature.

With that being said, the thread is now closed.
