Oh no! Our dear friends from college just recently move there. He works as a vet surgeon at a clinic in Christchurch. I hope they are OK.

Looks like lightning.
I thought it might be those quake lights

If you put in Wellington, it comes up very specifically as Alejos in Spain

Huh, I just got done looking at it. It does look like lightning, but if there was no storm in the area, then what else would have caused it?

There's always lights in the sky right before a earthquake.

Apparently, it already hit the South Island...

Nope...it's definitely Alejos in Spain. If you put in your location as Wellington, New Zealand...it throws up Alejos.

I'm definitely logged in. It's probably a glitch, since you guys have no trouble seeing it. I hate facebook. I'll keep trying...usually it'll resolve itself.

I keep seeing this tsunami threat being reported and evacuations etc BUT why when the main shock was on land ? Unless a chunk of the island dropped into the sea ? One of the areas being told to move to higher ground is The Chatham Islands which lie to the east of both Islands so that could fit a land mass having dropped into the sea but I sincerely hope not !
