Good point, though it's hard to determine whether it's the people or the technology, kind of like the chicken and the egg.

Would people 100 years ago were so neurotic? I kind of doubt that... I do believe that in this modern age we are overly stimulated, and that is a cause of a lot of frustration and neuroticism.

My dad has turned 60 recently and he's way more hooked into social media than I will ever be.

He just cannot miss a tweet, so I guess it's more of an approach than age thing that determines how people react to the online world...

You are right though, now it's just madness and it's going just as the prophecy... technology is enslaving humanity right in front of our eyes.

I don't believe we gonna be replaced entirely by robots and stuff like that, nor I believe in the Venus project kind of Utopian world... I just see that we as humanity will try to get everything automated as possible by all means necessary.

We're still stuck in the old paradigm that everyone has to work, but that's a whole different topic. We are very far from that point of freeing humanity so we could happily and stress-free engage each other at the local coffee shop or the library and socialize. We are at that point where we escape human life in favor of online life, maybe just because everything is so new and "exciting".

Happy to hear you got cured from anxiety! I had it 10 years ago, I was actually socializing a lot more under that influence.

I did actually think that being under the influence was the reason but in the end it was actually a parasite, that gave me both anxiety and aggression in equal doses.

I don't think we were so neurotic 20 years ago never mind 100 years ago, I think Atheism and the focus on self is the driving force, people were a lot more spiritual and cared for others in days gone by. Now it's all service to self and not to others.

I know I keep mentioning balance but I'm a computer engineer been working on computers since I was a kid in the 80's, I am surrounded by technology, I have a gaming pc, a mediacenter pc, a laptop, mobile phone etc.. My whole life is technology, outside of work I'm working on projects for friends businesses, friends of friends that need a fire stick running kodi. I work on my own projects, I am constantly busy working on technology related things but I balance my life.

My pal comes round every 2nd monday and we sit and watch a couple of episodes of shows and have a few games of Fifa.
Every Tuesday I meet my friend for dinner and then we go and watch a movie at home.
Wenesdays & Thursdays I might have my friend come to me or me to him for the mid week football.
Fridays my friend comes round for a catchup of our DC related tv shows.
Saturday I meet family for lunch either at my place or at my sisters.
Sunday I like to go for a drive and then maybe catchup on any work I need to do for friends etc..

All the times I'm socialising, we are not on our phones, we are talking, having fun and enjoying each others company.
We may show each other things on our phones but that's about it, we still socialise.

BTW my mum at 75 uses facebook and the like more than I do, so it's not a generational thing.

It is sad...we are both more connected and yet more alone all at the same time.

At my kid's karate class, all of the parents are on their phones. It's kind of shocking really. There was this one girl who was doing a skill level test to get a stripe for her belt and her mom was texting the entire time and never saw it. But, when it was over and a handful started clapping (her fellow students and me, the one parent actually watching) - the mom jumped up in a huge, over-compensating spectacle, whooping and hollering. And when her daughter sat down, she went right back to texting.
