'Rahmemail.com': Wikileaks shows Emanuel's use of personal domain

The Chicago Tribune carries this story today, and Wikileaks tweeted about recently.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel has used personal email accounts to communicate with top government and political figures, including through his own custom email domain that's similar to the one Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton used on a private email server as secretary of state.

Emanuel registered his personal email domain, rahmemail.com, on May 16, 2011 — the same day he was sworn into office as Chicago's mayor, records show.

That personal account surfaced among thousands of hacked emails from Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta posted by WikiLeaks late last month. A subsequent search for the mayor's email domain in 30,000 emails released by the State Department earlier this year found that Emanuel used the same account to communicate with Clinton when she was secretary of state.

The mayor also received an email from Podesta on a separate personal Gmail account that was included in the hacked emails posted by WikiLeaks.

Yeah, that Rahm Emanuel.

I wonder if Rahm is in crisis management mode right now?

The long and short of it is, Illinois has a law on the books that states that all official government communication goes through only government owned/approved devices and/or accounts. He emailed Podesta about a few things, and also invited Hillary to attend some sort of summit/symposium as a guest speaker with him and Bloomberg. He extended the offer through his person email account rather than his official account and it was determined that since it was a government event and was therefore considered official business that Emmanuel broke the law by using his person email account to make the invitation.

The exchanges came after the Chicago Tribune had filed Freedom of Information Act requests seeking Emanuel's phone and email records on issues of public interest, including the installation of a speed camera system and a revamp of the city's aging water infrastructure. The requests turned up no official emails from Emanuel.

The Tribune's 2015 lawsuit against Emanuel alleges that the mayor violated the state's open records laws by refusing to release communications about city business conducted through personal emails and text messages.

It looks like the Tribune is one of those old school news sites that actually does do it's job of watchdogging the government.

The city is saying that it doesn't think it should have to turn over Emmanuels personal account information since it is private and not an official record.

The judge said it should be up to the court to decide whether the communications are "public record" and wrote that communication on personal devices or within personal accounts "does not ipso facto mean that the communication is personal in nature."

The city appealed the ruling.

What says ATS?

Politicking, or does the Tribune have a case?

Politics have lots of actors like Hollywood but I think the better they are the sooner they end up at the top of the heap . The private Email stuff is only to hide from FOIR / Climategate taught us that

One of my questions is why does it seem so many things have hard links back to Chicago / Illinois?

I mean, is it easier to get away with crap there, compared to anywhere else?

It is a cultural thing. The people there have come to expect their politicians to be two things: #1 Democrats; #2 Corrupt

There are a lot of mafia connections with Chicago:

James Colosimo.
Johnny Torrio.
Al Capone.
Frank Nitti.
Paul Ricca.
Tony Accardo.
Samuel Carlisi.
John DiFronzo.

This thread may be of interest to you. It brought out a first-time organized crime historian to ATS.

I wouldn't go so far as to say the people there "expect" it, but may go so far as to say they "demand" it.

So much scratching backs going on there, it's ridiculous.

Hmm, someone should start looking for Obamamail.com

Wouldn't THAT not be a surprise..

Odds are good, at this point.

Bet there is one for each of the crooked, where they wheel'n'deal outside "official records"..

Hm, qos makes a valid point.

Could be mafia.

I mean Kennedy had to deal with them, the unions, they've helped government move troops. Corrupt government in Chicago is a competitive sport, and if you don't think the mafia doesn't have eyes, ears, and fingers all throughout it, you're kidding yourself.

And Cyg, Barack and Michelle have their own foundation.

That seems to be the in thing these days, have a foundation and then nest all your ops under it and shift, shuffle, and slide money hither, thither, and yon. I wonder what sorts of ties would come up if we started digging around Obama's yard?
