At least as 300 Hindu pilgrims were killed and 200 wounded today in a stampede near the Mandher Devi temple in western India. The stampede was caused
by a short-circuit in a power-cable hanging over their heads. The cable fell down and caused panic.

At least 300 Hindu pilgrims were killed and 200 wounded in a stampede near a temple in western India on Tuesday, police said.
Authorities said more than 150,000 pilgrims were on a pilgrimage to the popular Mandher Devi temple, situated on a hill near Wai, about 260 km
south-east of Bombay.
Witnesses said they had seen smoke rising from the area where the stampede took place.
Local television quoted Maharashtra state chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh as saying the stampede on the narrow winding path to the top of the hill
