60th MAW being ignominiously renamed the 60th Bomb Wing for a while....

That's funny!!!! Its fortunate that much of the area esp for takeoff and landings is over farmland. its an odd base to fly into and its always amusing to see how small our EC-145 looks when a C-5 lumbers by. We will pickup kids there that have often been flown across the Pacific etc then hop them to our facility

The AIB report shows that failure of maintenance crews to comply with the T.O., a faulty part, and failure of the boom operator to switch off the boom flight controls caused the problem. The aircraft was scheduled to depart Travis for refueling training with F-15s and a C-17, before touch and go practice at Mountain Home. At approximately 1632Z, the boom operator lowered the boom and powered the system up. The boom immediately began oscillating left and right in a U shaped pattern. Approximately two minutes later, the hoist cable broke. Approximately two minutes after that, the gimbal separated from the gimbal mounts, leaving the boom attached by hydraulic and electrical lines. At approximately 1705Z, the boom separated and fell into the field.
