“It is using its whole range of state organs and powers to push its foreign policy abroad in increasingly aggressive ways – involving propaganda, espionage, subversion and cyber-attacks. Russia is at work across Europe and in the UK today. It is MI5’s job to get in the way of that.”

Parker said Russia still had plenty of intelligence officers on the ground in the UK, but what was different now from the days of the cold war was the advent of cyberwarfare. Russian targets include military secrets, industrial projects, economic information and government and foreign policy.

I think this is finally a WW3 article that will answer all the critics. MI5 doesn't engage in saber rattling, empty threats, or hyperbole.

This isn't fearmongering or doom porn. This is WW3.

I suppose it doesn't really matter if the average person recoginizes it's happening. I don't think it will change anything personally. Prayers may help.

Can you maybe just lump all these Russia threat threads into a single general category?? World War 3 forum should have some actual war content, not just bland news reports.

Show me some artillery and air strikes baby, maybe some of those massive battle exercises and war games.

Russia has been a covert threat for decades. What’s different these days is that there are more and more methods available

aka - this isn't something new.

Sorry dude, if anything this is an indication we are possibly close to another cold war but WWIII? If WWIII were happening there would be no doubt in anyone's mind. Sure this could be the preamble to WWIII but it's not the actual war itself...

Isn't MI5 always internal UK security and MI6 foreign policies ?

So if this is genuine anti foreign xenophobia Sabre rattling, they could have at least used a good and proper MI6 talking head to spread more doom porn.

They are only a threat as long as we antagonise them for no reason.

Solution seems pretty obvious really.

War is peace, freedom is slavery, and russia is the aggressor in 1984, sorry, 2016...
Because russia surrounded the whole western world, expanded on his western enlargement to the borders of the UK and USA, installs an anti rocket shield at the borders of the UK and the USA, is the only one in syria that was not officially called for help, by Assad, russia is the one that funds "moderate" beheader terrorists.
I am even sure it was russia that lied in the Tonkin incident, did 9/11 and made the "WMD" in iraq disapear...

Yup - MI5 = domestic matters, MI6 = Overseas and a lot of illegal corporate espionage, GCHQ = Electronics/listening agency stuff. Armour Group = What SIS need to do but can't legally or politically ddo it.

There's definitely a lot of chatter from various areas of SIS through press conferences and journalists they have working on papers/newsdesks - but it all seems a general anti-russia thing rather than specifics - wouldn't be suprised if they've been hacked as the security is pretty terrible.

Where's Tony Blair??? I could save him some time and CONFIRM that Russia has WMD's!!!

This is just the UK and USA colluding together again to hype up the "boogeyman" factor like Saddam, except now it's Russia and Putin.

Same ol' playbook.

MI5 does not rattle sabres?

Are you even living in the same physical universe as I am? Russia a growing threat to the UK? Utter bloody nonsense! Which part of the UK is under threat? The bit in bloody Syria? I tell you what, bring all our agents home out of the bloody way, and let Russia deal with our mess. Then we can pay them off in installments and actually get down to the business of getting this species to survive long enough to enjoy peace for once.

God bloody grief. Its a bit rich, our Military Intelligence bods accusing Russia of being a growing threat. Its not like they have been terrorizing nations with which we are affiliated, using proxy armies to destabilise our international partners and trading associates! Thats the sort of thing WE do!

Oh yes it does. And when the head of MI5 makes a public announcement, you can be sure that there is more going on than the letter of what s/he says. In this case, the Russian angle has been given prominence by The Guardian. He said several other things, including: Expansion of MI5 officer numbers from 4,000 to 5,000 (yeah, and the rest!); surveillance Bill does not give undue powers of monitoring communications (OK...); several jihadi plots foiled in recent times; some Snowden-bashing. The usual, in other words.

The fact that MI5 has gone to The Guardian, a soft-centre left newspaper, rather than its pet press-packs at the Telegraph or Mail tells you that this is a charm offensive. There is nothing but distrust between the spooks and The Guardian.

And my suspicion is that The Guardian has bigged up the 'Russian threat' element because of the Trump-Putin link that the political establishment is desperately attempting to make stick, as well as imprinting the Cold War II meme even further in the public's mind, and that this was Parker's aim in going to The Guardian a few days before the US elections in the first place.

When Parker says:

Russia is at work across Europe and in the UK today. It is MI5’s job to get in the way of that.

- this is hardly a state secret, is it?

I think you are fear-mongering. This is not WW3. It seemed like a balanced view that Russian is a threat along many fronts, but not military as that was not described.

From the Guardian article, as per OP link...

“Russia increasingly seems to define itself by opposition to the west and seems to act accordingly,” said Parker. “You can see that on the ground with Russia’s activities in Ukraine and Syria. But there is high-volume activity out of sight with the cyber-threat. Russia has been a covert threat for decades. What’s different these days is that there are more and more methods available.”

This is pretty accurate. Noting Russia has been implicated in a variety of cyber attacks on the West in recent months and years.
