The discontinuity in the Andreas fault system around the Salton sea, between hwy 8 and hwy 10 has shown hundreds of recent small squakes. this is the largest crossing the fault line...6 or 7 in one hour. here is the link to the USGS live site:
earthquake.usgs.gov... 2C%22listFormat%22%3A%22default%22%2C%22mapposition%22%3A%5B%5B32.59310597426537%2C-116.51824951171875%5D%2C%5B33.827075293445986%2C-114.7604370117187 5%5D%5D%2C%22overlays%22%3A%5B%22plates%22%5D%2C%22restrictListToMap%22%3A%5B%22restrictListToMap%22%5D%2C%22search%22%3Anull%2C%22sort%22%3A%22newest %22%2C%22timezone%22%3A%22utc%22%2C%22viewModes%22%3A%5B%22list%22%2C%22map%22%2C%22settings%22%5D%2C%22timeZone%22%3A%22utc%22%2C%22event%22%3Anull%7 D

This area is interesting because it is the Y junction between the California quake system and the Yellowstone quake line that heads south to that point. Plus the discontinuity in Andreas is about the size of the Salton Sea. USGS has added smaller faults recently in that area.
Is a humdinger on the way???? Date of this observation is 10/31/2016 7:48 eastern.

Yes this area is interesting, it seems to be moving all the time, the last big one South of the area was a 7.2 on 2010

I'm about 70 miles from there haven't felt nor heard of any quakes of late, besides small quakes all the time, nothing new ,hardly a precursor to anything, maybe a news distraction

You must of scooped the news,I see the activity, but strange not feeling anything, and I'm about 8 miles from the fault line,70 miles from Salton Sea,I stand corrected

I'm not sure how long you've been tracking that fault line, so I'm just going to assume you've been looking none stop at it for over a year.

Your right it has been pretty active, but it's always been pretty active. What I find interesting is there are a number of quakes on the West coastal area of South America and Mexico. It started down in South America and they slowly moved North along the fault line, at a speed of one per week. Now it's near the West coast of North America almost to that as you said "junction".

While it's right below the junction I"m not too worried I just don't know what will happen once it goes past it.

The area around the Salton Sea is an active geothermal area and has had volcanic eruptions in relatively recent history- within 1500 years, give or take 500 or so. It is also where the East Pacific Rift Zone transforms from a spreading fault to a strike-slip fault.

a reply to: Oldtimer2 i did not mention that the quakes in one hour were 7 above 3.0...and are somewhat in a line perpendicular to a continuation of the andreas...i think if you were within 70 miles you would have felt them..

strike slip to spreading. now that is an important clue to understanding what might happen there, i sometimes live in the phoenix area and felt a 6 from further south on the andreas....in mexico.

a reply to: ObjectZero i watch the USGS site every day..out of habit. i live nearby to andreas, phx... now i am interested how you see quakes moving north along the plate line from SA... recently i have seen the entire fault line from chile up lit up with 5 and above, i guess it would be a quake map with a time slider.

For a little more info check into the Imperial Fault and East Pacific Rise.

I felt these in a dream: in my dream there were a couple of earthquakes in a dingy Mexican restaurant. When I woke up in the morning, I checked USGS and sure enough there was a swarm of them last night.
