Maybe the guys just got a really weird imagination?

I wouldn't jump to psychosis because of a story, though.

If you like this kind of thing, you will enjoy the Amber novels of the late Roger Zelazny.

Mind you, they don't pretend to be anything but fiction.

no
and also why would he do such a unbelievable story when he could make up something more believable?

You're kidding, right? The most bizarre 'explanations' come form the guilty, trying to weave fantastic tales that hopefully excuse themselves but are really unprovable.
If you ever watch criminal shows where they show recorded interrogations, people say the stupidest stuff. Like I shot him, but I didn't really mean to. It was an accident, it was their fault. They grabbed the gun. It just went off.

Case closed. He admits to holding the gun and shooting the victim.

It's a strange tale and contains many bizarre elements. If it was a falsehood, I'd have to ask what is the motivation for his tale and the inspiration for his description and if you are going fabricate something, surely the less complicated and surreal it is, the easier it is going to be to stick to and re-tell, without losing any crucial details.

I don't know. Some tales are so strange that the listener has no choice but to regard them as nothing more than a delusion or deliberate lie. The unfortunate thing is, that they cannot be substantiated.
