The human embryonic stem cell lines, approved by the Bush administration for research have been found to be contaminated. This recent revelation, means that the cells cannot be used for medical experiments and the like. It will take a year or two according to scientists to regrow the cells.

sfgate.com
All human embryonic stem cell lines approved for use in federally funded research are contaminated with a foreign molecule from mice that may make them risky for use in medical therapies, according to a study released Sunday.

Researchers at the UC San Diego and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla report that if the stem cells are transplanted into people, the cells could provoke an immune system attack that would wipe out their ability to deliver cures for diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and diabetes.

The finding is a setback to the Bush administration's controversial policy of providing federal funding only for research using a limited number of embryonic stem cell lines already in existence.

As bad as it may seems, its great news for California. last year we passed a 3 billion dollar bond measure and established the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. This will put California on the forefront of research in this critical area. Free of the religious and political influences of the White House, the research garnered by the state could benefit mankind for quite some time.

Not a recent revelation. ...This was known long ago and was the main argument for funding stem cell therapy.

...More spin. Wonder where this one's going...

Human + Mouse = Humouse, the new breed of soldier.

After the disasterous "pigman" experement, the TPTB have been looking for a new, cheap source of manpower for the new Army.

Seriously, It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Will Bush reverse himself?

Indeed, california is going to see a massive influx of researchers and a huge boost to their scientific economy.

So, is this a power play by Arnold, hmmmm?

Like a universal soilder thing? No, the ballot measure was already on the books when the governator took over, he did support it and his popularity helped combat religious groups opposed to it. As did the Hollywood support etc.

Arnold is a pragmatic and anything that bring in business and this will no doubt do that in spades

Wonder how "ALL" cells became contaminated

how about "on purpose" ?

From the link:

When the Bush-approved stem cells were first isolated, they were grown in petri dishes lined with cells from mice and bathed in blood serum from calves and other animals. The animal material was used to encourage the stem cells to multiply while preserving their unusual ability to mature into any kind of human cell.

Researchers have suspected that exposing the stem cells to animal products could have contaminated them with viruses, proteins or other molecules that could be dangerous to people. Now they have evidence that it did.

Sounds like someone took a pretty big gamble here. Maybe not a deliberate mistake, but certainly not a wise one if you ask me.

...My guess - the "contaminant" is an infectious prion (similar to the prion that causes 'mad cow' disease) - fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) causes stem cells to mutate by making actin proteins mis-fold into "a-smooth muscle actin." ...The disease infects nearly 100% of Americans by adulthood - and it stands to reason that's what the stem cells are contaminated with.
