Well, let's face it the US is number one in many positive things, and remains an advanced developed nation. However, over the last couple of decades some key measures of America's advancement have stalled.

This stalling has been due to political impotence. For example, while Obama-care may not have been the best solution, it is an attempt to address health poverty, but has been widely ridiculed and weakened by politicians with a vested interest in the (lucrative) status quo that produces high-cost heath care but with poor clinical outcomes to many who cannot pay. Everyone knows gun crime and murder rates in the US are really crap, but the politicians cannot do anything about it because the general electorate and lobby groups that matter are not impacted - it's generally a problem in poor, invisible and black neighbourhoods fighting over drugs.

Sadly, the US is becoming jaded. They do need to start to learn from the more enlightened Europeans, even if this is over the dead bodies of the political elites who are serving themselves and not their wider constituency.

You just need to look at the rather embarrassing presidential contest at the moment to see the lack of focus on reality. As an outsider looking in, I can say the US will be poorly served by its next president because both are very poor choices. This of course will suit the existing political class who see the status quo as preferable to challenge.

OK. Rant over.
