I think the big bang happened because God caused it.

I don't think both are mutually exclusive or contradictory at all. The big bang is HOW God created the universe.

It would be like some awakening in a VR video game trying to figure out how they got there

Will We Ever Have The Answer To How The Universe Was Created ?

No!
Because the Universe is/was never 'created'.
Philosophically and scientifically, 'creation' is impossible!
It is just a self-justifying and ignorant 'belief' programmed into religious 'drones'.
Anachronistic.

People create stuff all the time. It is the main process by which new things happen.
Please explain why you say creation is impossible, what is your line of reasoning?

'Creation', as I use it, and as it is used when referring to a 'beginning' of the Universe theory, means to 'create'/manufacture 'something' from 'nothing'. An impossibility in many 'lines of reasoning'.
First, there is no 'nothing' from which to manufacture/boink into existence a 'material/something' Universe.
Quantum tells us that the Universe, and all it's features are ultimately constructed of 'Mind', 'imagination'.
It also tells us that 'time' and 'motion' are not possible, ultimately, as Zeno has long ago shown.

"The Laws of Nature are not rules controlling the metamorphosis of what is, into what will be. They are descriptions of patterns that exist, all at once... " - Genius; the Life and Science of Richard Feynman
All 'eternity' at once; Here! Now!!

There is only one moment (Planck moment; 10^-43/sec; "almost" one billion trillion trillion trillionths of a second!!!) of the entirety of existence/Reality/the Universe!
All existence, ever, is one, literally, 'timeless' moment!
Now!

"Reality is a synchrony of moments!"

A 'Planck moment' is not a measure of 'time', it does not exist long enough to have any 'duration'.
Thus, existence/Universe/Reality, the sum total of all 'moments', is literally timeless!
String together every moment ever; 0+0+0+0.... =0!
All of existence is the Singularity!

What existence is, is a moment of Self Knowledge!
Not anything is 'created', what exists is 'perceived'.
A 'moment' is a unit of 'perception', a 'percept'.
'Thought' perceives the 'appearance' of motion and time. But it is just an 'appearance'. All such dualities, necessary to perceive that which we imagine exists, does not reflect the Reality in toto, merely the unique bit that is perceived/experienced "at the moment"!
Reality/Truth cannot be comprehensively perceived by any single unique Perspective but ALL Perspectives together, Here! Now!

"The complete Universe (Reality/Truth/God/'Self!'/Tao/Brahman... or any feature herein...) can be completely defined/described as the synchronous sum-total of all Perspectives!" - Book of Fudd
ALL INCLUSIVE!!!

The single One Universal Consciousness, for one moment, perceives/experiences/Knows OurSelf!
There is no 'thing' being created from nothing.
It is all just Mind, never anything else! The duality of 'thought' sees the appearance of 'things'. An artifact of our 'magnification' makes these empty quantum information waves appear to collapse into specific things. That is but an appearance, not Reality.

So, existence, being a momentary Universal Self Knowledge, doesn't require any 'creation', any more than you 'create' a unicorn when you close your eyes.
That is a good example, the Universe is 'created' no different than closing your eyes and imagining a unicorn.
Did you really 'create' a unicorn?
No, you 'imagined' it.
Just as we unique Conscious Perspectives (Souls) imagine the quantum undifferentiated 'potential' as actually 'differentiated', which it never is, otherwise.

Not anything exists to have been 'created', we merely peer into the Cloud wit out severely truncated Perspective and imagine/perceive that which we do.
For a moment.

Creation/destruction, good/evil, right/wrong, life/death, space/time... all exist in the duality of 'thought'.
Beyond 'thought', there is no such duality.
Beyond 'thought', there is no Universe of 'things' to wonder where 'they' came from!
No 'things', no need to posit a 'creator'.

'Causality' is a(-n appearance, a) failed theory, and with no 'causality', there can be no 'creation' (causing to exist).

What is, is not 'created', it is 'perceived'.

Existence/Reality/Truth is all inclusive!
'One'!
That which is perceived exists.
That which exists is perceived.
Not a thing exists (notice that I didn't say that 'nothing' exists, 'cause it don't! *__- ) that is not perceived!
Not a thing is perceived that does not exist!
There is no, nor can there be, any evidence to the contrary!

What do we perceive?
Mind/Consciousness/'Self!'/God...

(Disclaimer; I am using words and thoughts, all dualistic, to 'intimate' the Singularity of a Holistic Reality...)

No!
Because the Universe is/was never 'created'.
Philosophically and scientifically, 'creation' is impossible!

If the laws that govern this universe were created with this universe(s), science goes out of the window.

The Universe is not 'governed' by 'laws';

"The Laws of Nature are not rules controlling the metamorphosis of what is, into what will be. They are descriptions of patterns that exist, all at once... " - Genius; the Life and Science of Richard Feynman
All 'eternity' at once; Here! Now!!
Science!

We can't say what is required to make a universe OUTSIDE of a universe

There is no 'outside the Universe', the Universe is ALL inclusive, Here! Now!

, we can only speculate on how to create a universe within our universe. Our universe wasn't created in our universe though.

Speculate until you turn blue, not anything is/was ever 'created'.
Some'thing' does not come from no'thing'.
Please see my other responses for a more in depth answer on this subject.

That which is outside your system can not be 'known'.

You are wondering about what was there before, or the idea of an area or void coming first, but that is a construct from the brain of a being in an anthropomorphic Universe.

The 'concepts' that would be needed would be like trying to explain 'outer space' to a fish with intelligence. You couldn't, because it is outside their existence and experience.

You couldn't explain 'UP' to a 2-D being.

Likewise, what is the point of 'knowing' or conceptualizing a concept outside of the Universe? You might have a supernatural being "explain it" but they'd be using "words" that had no meaning for you.

"There was the E-domain and it was filled with B-substance which is insubstantial"

^ does that make sense? But if it's the 'truth', of what help is it?

But since energy cannot be created or destroyed (as far as we have ever observed), where is all this nearly infinite amount of stuff (in all the bubble universes) coming from (assuming mass energy equivalence holds for all feasible bubble universes)?

From energy of vaccum that's above the ground state, aka the false vacuum.

And quantum fluctuations only make particles, not universes, and then only in situations where the virtual particles are prevented from re-annihalation (like extreme gavitational gradients).

Quantum fluctuations can allso allow the tunneling effect, allowing false vacuum to decay to a lower energy state.

We don't even know what Reality is. We don't even know if what we see and perceive is the 'real world'.
With the mainstream model we have it's impossible to know what created what we call Universe, even with the telescopes coming in the future we already know there is a limit of what we can see, thanks to the universe expansion.
Big Bang, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Black Holes, all of that makes sense because of our observations, but common sense tells us that can't be right.

Quantum mechanics already told us reality is much more complex than we think, we don't know what Gravity really is, we don't know what Matter really is and so on.

That's why theories like the Simulation Theory make much more sense than what we have right now.
