It's getting less crowded.

To be honest, the whole of the Mediterranean is amply covered by European (NATO) navies and air forces. The Eastern part has Turkey, the Greeks and the Brits (from Cyprus), so you can stick a carrier there if you like, but in the great scheme of things it's just a gesture.

Anyway, in my understanding the Russian carrier is not even allowed enter the Black Sea via the Bosporus Straits (as if there was any other way). This is a reason why Russia is so keen to keep the dictator Assad in power - lose him then they may lose their base.

Ahhh the hypocrisy. The U.S. plopped 2 battleships near Russia casually during the summer. Everybody stayed cool.

Russia puts one ship in the Mediterranean and Brittain sh!ts a brick.

What happens next? NATO will be flexing all over Russia's border. Moreso than they already are.

The Uk is certainly not #ting a brick, its just good manners to offer safe passage in the busiest shipping lanes in the world

According to Norwegian media the Russians have ended the flight ops exercise early and have moved further south.

But by 12 o'clock enlightened Joint Headquarters TV 2 that the Russians seem to have dropped exercise. War ships were then in the North Sea at Shetland, heading towards the English Channel. Ship manager at the Norwegian frigate KNM "Fridtjof Nansen" confirms to TV 2. - The Russian vessels sailed into British economic zone earlier today and is now in international waters east of Shetland, said Commander Daniel Thomassen.

Well, the question is whether the RN will have more than an inflatable dingy available to escort the Russian PR machine as it chuffs through the English Channel and passed the major Royal Navy establishments.

HMS Richmond (Type 23 Frigate) has been tracking the task force in the North Sea. HMS Duncan (Type 45 Destroyer) has left port in the past 24 hours to assist with the escort.

A Good informing story in the Daily Mail today, wasn't aware the Type-45 destroyer HMS Duncan – is the world's most advanced air-defence destroyer. though I'm sure Russia is well aware and will take note.

It marks a further breakdown of relations between the two countries after Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson became embroiled in a row with the Russian embassy last week. According to a Nato spokesman the fleet's destination does not 'inspire confidence' that the nation is seeking a political solution to the Syrian conflict. The official said: 'Russia has the right to operate in international waters. There are plans in place for Nato navies to monitor the Russian ships as they head for the Mediterranean. 'At the same time, the deployment of the carrier group to the eastern Mediterranean does not inspire confidence that Russia is working towards a political solution to the conflict in Syria.

I have to say I do agree Russia has as much right as any other navy to move its assets around , how-ever the message this move sends is concerning .

It's a neat helicopter. They brought some ships to Pearl Harbor and did an open house and had one on board.

It is from 2009 in the Gulf of Aden. See large image. It appears just to be the angle.

I'm in North Yorkshire and near some airbase and they were flying euro fighters all night last night around Bedale. I reckon to do with the Russians but I don't know for sure.

A P-8A Poseidon, flying as Pelican 13, just dropped from 26,000 to 4,500 feet and is heading up the Channel. Looks like he's going to be flying past the group.

Nothing to do with the Russians. RAF Quick Reaction Alert Eurofighter Typhoons don't get scrambled without tanker support when the Russians are involved. A QRA scramble from RAF Lossiemouth or RAF Coningsby doesn't go unnoticed. No QRA was scrambled last night. RAF Leeming is currently hosting foreign fighter aircraft (Swedish Gripens) for exercise Joint Warrior. There is night flying for parts of the exercise.

I live practically next door to Coningsby and can confirm that, apart from some flights by 41 squadron (Tornados), it's been pretty damn quiet around here the past few evenings.

russians have one aircraft carrier, americans have 20.

american defence budget is 596 billion a year.

russian defence budget is 40-60 billion a year depending on whose numbers you look at.

if there is a naval battle it will be a short one.

just posturing on putin, he has 6 months left in gold he burning through to prop up his economy and currency before russia is bankrupt.

its an economic war, one which putin will lose. putin got greedy and tried a hostile takeover of the banking and financial system and failed. now the board members are pissed he tried to screw em over so they will bankrupt russia.

they just gotta keep increasing sanctions and dropping the price of gold.
