“The fact that both countries started to talk about joint actions on the military level is a very serious development,” said Vasily Kashin, a senior fellow of Russian Academy of Science’s Far Eastern Studies Institute. “The threat from U.S. missile defense pushes both China and Russia closer to each other. For Russia and China, the policy of containment is the containment of the U.S. first of all.”

...

International security issues will feature when Xi and Putin meet, Chinese officials said at a briefing on Monday in Beijing. “China and Russia hold the same position on the most important international and regional issues, including on Syria and Afghanistan,” Vice Foreign Minister Li Baodong said.

The emboldened paragraph is the key to why Russia's involvement in Syria isn't primarily about a gas pipeline. China's long-standing policy is not to get involved in the internal affairs of other nations. A gas pipeline in Syria would be an internal affair for Russia.

The article linked above is also the key to why I believe the situation in Syria will turn into WW3 if it escalates into a war between Russia and the U.S. China cannot let it's most important ally go down in my opinion.

China and Russia becoming closer allies than ever sure is happening at a fortuitous point for Russia. Or is it happening by design? I think the only way Russia or China win WW3 is together.

The American Century is over. It was a mere blip in history with normal service now being restored.

It makes sense for Russia to ally itself with China as the US slips down the Karzi with all everything else that belongs down in the sewers

How so? Russia is basically begging to lift sanctions. China needs us as consumers if you weren't aware. They will never risk their life blood. Take that to the bank.we have no real adversaries that come close. Why do you think putins go to are nukes?

So China will allow itself to be dragged down by Russia? Any military action involving the US and China would result in the destruction of China's economy, affecting the already growing political instability in China.

Just wait and see! And see how fast your "allies" abandon you the moment things do get really tricky. The old mantra always holds true: the bigger they are, the harder they fall. Typical American arrogance to believe everyone needs you. Pah!

You have to admit that Chinese politics have been exceptional in the past decades. China is a global player and it needs to partner with the likes to move forward. They have money and they can buy things, they like to negotiate, no need to fight over what you can purchase at cost. Their military spending is enormous, too, but still less than the US.
