I'm pretty sure that the walkie-talkies you're describing are the same thing as the UK's PMR446 service. I think the US run a thing called FRS (Family Radio Service) which is essentially the same thing, a license-free radio service with a 2 mile range. The frequencies in the UK are all around 446Mhz and I'm not sure what they are in the US but I can guarantee they won't be close enough to genuine police, military or government frequencies.

Again, not to mention the fact that those frequencies are definately digitally encrypted (at least they are in the UK).

Too true. And yes, you can bet on encrytped transmissions... There's likely some unencrypted ones as well, but they won't sound like anything more than typical security radio talk. "Sector 4 secure....Roger" Not too revealing, now is it?


REASONS WHY IT WOULD NOT WORK

1) Mountains would block most radio communications.
2) Being within two miles of the installation would get you busted if not killed.
3) Encryption is used.

As for security radio talk, they have special terms for the different areas (but you can decode what they are saying with the security manual that I have).

Even if you did get to hear what they would be saying, it would most likely be them talking about you being in the area listening to them...

The best thing you can do there is take photos of the base and aircraft. I wouldn't waste my time there on trying to listen to them. Even trying to fly a model airplane in would be more worth it (just before you guys make a thread on that, it has been done
).

ON FLIGHT. WHEN THIS EVALUATION IS COMPLETED AN ANNUAL EVALUATION
WILL BE CONDUCTED ON THAT INDIVIDUAL FOR THE ASSIGNED DUTY
POSITION. AN EVALUATION WILL BE CONDUCTED IF AN INDIVIDUAL
CHANGES DUTY POSITIONS AND IS CERTIFIED BY HIS SUPERVISOR FOR THE
NEW POSITION. THE QC EVALUATION WILL CONSIST OF A THREE PHASE
EVALUATION: ORAL, WRITTEN AND PRACTICAL. A MINIMUM OF SCORE OF
70% FOR THE ORAL, 70% FOR THE WRITTEN AND 80% FOR THE PRACTICAL
HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED FOR ALL POSITIONS EXCEPT FOR THE SECURITY
CONTROLLER, A SCORE OF 80% OVER ALL AREAS IS REQUIRED. ALL
POSITIONS WILL TAKE A WEAPONS/USE OF FORCE TEST WHICH IS
CORRECTABLE TO 100%.

SECURITY CATEGORIES ARE DIFFERENT POSTURES OF SECURITY REQUIRED TO
MEET SECURITY OBJECTIVES OF DEPARTMENTAL PROGRAMS. THE POSTURES
MAY EFFECT SITE OPERATIONS INVOLVING NON-PERMANENT PERSONNEL NOT
CLEARED ON THAT PROGRAM. THE CATEGORIES ARE AS FOLLOWS:

CATEGORY 1: THIS IS THE SECURITY POSTURE DURING NON-DUTY HOURS
WHEN PROGRAM ACTIVITIES ARE NOT IN OPERATION AND THE MAJORITY OF
THE BASE POPULACE HAS COMPLETED DUTY FOR THE DAY.

CATEGORY 2: THIS IS THE SECURITY POSTURE DURING NORMAL DUTY HOURS
WHEN PROGRAM ASSESTS ARE NOT EXPOSED AND THE MAJORITY OF THE BASE
POPULACE IS PRESENT FOR DUTY.

CATEGORY 3: THIS IS AN INCREASED SECURITY POSTURE REQUIRED FOR
DEPARTMENTAL PROGRAMS. THE LETTER DESIGNATORS FOLLOWING THE
NUMBER '3' WILL IDENTIFY THE PROGRAM AS IDENTIFIED IN DET 3 REG
125-2. THIS CATEGORY WILL BE IN EFFECT WHENEVER DEPARTMENTAL
PROGRAM ASSESTS ARE EXPOSED ON THE GROUND AND INADVERTENT EXPOSURE
TO NON-CLEARED PERSONNEL IS HIGHLY POSSIBLE. NON-PERMANENT
PERSONNEL NOT CLEARED FOR THAT PROGRAM WILL BE SEQUESTERED.

CATEGORY 4: THIS INCREASED SECURITY POSTURE IS BASICALLY THE SAME
AS CATEGORY 3, EXCEPT DEPARTMENTAL PROGRAM ASSESTS ARE EXPOSED IN
OPERATION AND INADVERTENT EXPOSURE TO NON-CLEARED PERSONNEL IS
PROBABLE. NON-PERMANENT PERSONNEL NOT CLEARED FOR THAT PROGRAM
WILL BE SEQUESTERED.

CATEGORY 3/4 WITH NIGHT TIME DEVIATIONS

DURING NIGHT HOURS, APPROVED PROGRAM PERSONNEL MAY IMPLEMENT
CATEGORY 3 THROUGH SECURITY WHEN TEO IS NOT MANNING THE CURRENT
OPERATIONS CENTER (WHITE ROOM). HOWEVER, A NIGHT TIME CATEGORY 3
IMPLEMENTED BY THE PROGRAM PERSONNEL IN THIS MANNER MUST TERMINATE
THE CATEGORY 30 MINUTES PRIOR TO SUNRISE, UNLESS TEO CURRENT
OPERATIONS (WHITE ROOM) IS MANNED AND OPERATING.

STANDARD DEVIATIONS: APPROVED PROGRAM PERSONNEL MAY REQUEST OR
APPROVE A STANDARD DEVIATION TO CATEGORY 3. THE STANDARD DEVIATION
ALLOWS NON PERMANENT PERSONNEL NOT CLEARED ON THAT PROGRAM TO MOVE
WITHIN THE MAIN BASE AREA WITHOUT SEQUESTERING. OTHER VISITOR

THE FIELD SENSOR IMPLANTED THROUGHOUT THE RANGES ARE ELECTRONICAL
SENSORS WHICH ARE ABLE TO IDENTIFY A VEHICLE ENTERING OR EXITING
THE INSTALLATION BY OTHER THAN APPROVED/AUTHORIZED ENTRY POINTS.

A. CONSTRUCTION OF THE SENSOR: THE SENSOR SYSTEM INCORPORATES A
CANISTER WHICH HOUSES THE 'BRAIN' OF THE SENSOR, TWO (2) PROBES
FOR RECEIVING INBOUND/OUTBOUND SIGNALS, THE ANTENNA AND A BATTERY
PACK FOR POWER.

B. OPERATION OF THE SENSOR: WHEN PROPERLY PLACED IN THE GROUND A
VEHICLE PASSES THE FIRST PROBE INDICATING WHETHER LEAVING OR
ENTERING THE AREA. THIS SIGNAL IS THEN SENT VIA THE ANTENNA TO
(IN SOME CASES A REPEATER) THE SMS IN CSC WHICH DECIPHERS THE
SIGNAL AND DISPLAYS IT ON THE COLOR MONITOR AND THE VT220 SCREEN.

NOTE #1: THE PROBES SHOULD BE BURIED/COVERED COMPLETELY WITH DIRT
AND THE FLAT END FACING THE ROADWAY.

NOTE #2: THE ANTENNA IS NORMALLY MOUNTED TO THE CANISTER BUT IT
CAN BE MOUNTED TO A STAKE FOR BETTER TRANSMITTING CAPABILITIES.

C. PATROL PROCEDURES: WHEN A PATROL IS DISPATCHED TO A SENSOR TO
DISCONNECT IT DUE TO NUMEROUS ALARMS, THEY WILL DISCONNECT THE
BATTERY SUPPLY FROM THE BATTERY. IF YOU DISCONNECT IT FROM THE
CANISTER (J5+12V INPUT) INSURE YOU REPLACE THE PROTECTIVE CAP ON
THE 'J5' CONNECTOR. DO NOT DISCONNECT ANYTHING ELSE UNLESS TOLD
BY THE SENSOR SECTION PERSONNEL.

NOTE #1: IF A PROBE IS LAYING SIDEWAYS, REPOSITION IT SO THE FLAT
SIDE IS FACING THE ROADWAY.

NOTE #2: IF ANY OF THE CABLES ARE CHEWED UP OR MANGLED, NOTIFY
THE SENSOR SECTION PERSONNEL (IN PERSON, ANNOTATION ON THE
ACTIVITY LOG OR LEAVE A NOTE).

D. IDENTIFYING THE SENSOR: CURRENTLY AS YOU APPROACH THE GENERAL
AREA OF A SENSOR THERE SHOULD BE A STAKE PAINTED WITH ORANGE PAINT
ON ONE SIDE. WITHIN 20 FEET OF THAT STAKE YOU SHOULD FIND THE
SENSOR.

STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE
MOVEMENT OF TEST ARTICLES

1. This Standard Operating Procedure is intended to describe
instructions for the safe and secure transportation of the test
articles by members of the USAFO Test Force. It is further
intended to provide information to those site organizations
involved in support of the USAFO (TEG).

2. The test articles are assembled in building 735, and then
transported to either the munitions storage area, or directly to
the Weapons Test Range (WTR) launch area.

3. The test articles will be transported on a missile pallet that
is bolted to a pallet trailer. The articles will be towed behind a
truck with a pindle hook hitch. This vehicle will be escorted by
two (2) other vehicles in a convoy. The vehicles will consist of a
security vehicle in the lead, with emergency flashers on, and one
member of the USAFO Test Force aboard. The prime mover, towing the
test articles, will be 50 meters behind the first vehicle and will
be driven by a member of the USAFO Test Force. The last vehicle
following the prime mover by 50 meters will be a security vehicle
with emergency flashers on and one member of the USAFO Test Force
aboard. This convoy will be used for the transportation of test
articles to all destinations.

4. The speed of the convoy will be no more than 15mph on the main
base area, and 30mph on the road to the WTR. The lead security
vehicle will be responsible to insure that the convoy speed limits
are adhered to.

5. The USAFO Security Manager and EOD will be notified at least
two days prior to any test article movement, and is responsible to
make the arrangements for security escorts. Security escorts will
be arranged through the Base Security Officer.

6. Additionally, if movement is to the WTR, Base Security will be
directed to close the 700 gate to incoming traffic until the
convoy has reached its' destination.

7. Base Safety Officer will normally monitor all convoys to insure
that all safety guidelines are met that have been established.

8. Personnel assigned to the transportation of the test articles
will notify Base Safety Officer, and Base Fire Company when the
convoy is ready to depart the start point, and when the convoy has
reached its destination.

9. If movement is to the WTR, the move will be scheduled to take
place either before or after normal duty hours.

10. Point of contact for this SOP is the Operations Office, TEG,
extension 3853.

The guy on that site says he has actual recordings from some the camo dude's transmissions. It is mostly boring stuff like station 4 all clear, but there is one transmission where some guys are installing an antennae and they have to direct a helicopter in to bring them some equipment or check something. Anyway, it has some of the frequencies on there that he picked up with a scanner so maybe that will help.

You must remember though that the Cammo Dudes aren't actually base personnel, they are rent-a-cops brought in through Wackenhut Security.

While you should still be scared to death of these guys if you make a wrong move, the inner perimeter of Area 51 likely has it's own selection security force.

Therefore, it is possible the Cammo's are using standard radio units... however, it is still likely the frequencies are encrypted.

Stalking Panther, it sounds as if you have a couple of FRS radios programmed with public frequencies. You can bet you won't hear much more than families on trips, campers and hikers ect.. using these.

Its a sure bet you won't hear anyone in area 51 using these freqs. They won't pick up police or ems either. Military and public service use different freqs varied by area. Some use VHF and some use UHF..and the newest technology is called "trunking" to which most are migrating. These are, in simple terms, closed systems which use DTMP coding and impedded tones to allow the user to key up their repeater and recieve transmissions from it.

However, it you use your radio to attempt to communicate with anyone in Area 51, my guess is you'll get a response (although not a legit one) as the FRS radio system has become the playland of pranksters and jokers with nothing better to do than spend their time abusing an otherwise useful device.

This hasn't got anything to do with Area 51 but I thought you might find it interesting all the same. I was down near the Northern Ireland / Republic Of Ireland border a few days ago at a popular caravan site on this side. Well, anyway, in the UK 446Mhz is reserved for license free public radio. What's stupid is that because I was close to the border and we were basically on the coast, you could see directly into southern irish waters and the Royal Irish Navy happened to be using 446Mhz as their comms frequency.

You'd think they would've known something like this before assigning frequencies to ships, wouldn't you?

You always have to keep in mind that Cammo Dudes are just security guards that have limited access to the base itself. Like what was said earlier, they are like rent-a-cops. So maybe you could pick their signals up, but you would just get the stuff normal security guards would say (because they are just normal security guards).

[So if anyone starts a post called "Let's Kidnap a Cammo Dude and Get Information From Him" we can all say....

Lol yeah it wont work with those little walkies. Maybe it would work if i got the police walkie talkies. The big one, cause they have like maybe a 10 or even more mile range. And trust me Area-51 would never shoot me. I'm just a kid, and i'm sure Area-51 would not wanna be on the news for shooting a kid

While I have no comment on the alledged shoot to kill policy, I will comment on the radios.

As everyone else has said, they will be encrypted. Its par for the course.

You can try data capture with a scanner, though I have no idea how to do it myself. If you had a powerfull enough computer you might be able to decode it....in about 50 or 60 years if your lucky.

I know with my scanner I can plug it into the computer and get pager messages. Has anyone tried this out there? Just chuck a discriminator (I believe its called) on the scanner, get a double male cord and plug it into the line in plug in the back. Could work, could not. I have no idea.

In Sweden we consider the "Ether" radio waves, fequncies to be a natural resource.
In Sweden you are aloud to listen to ANY frequency and ANY mode (FM,AM,SSB,DATA(Of whatever sort).
With this it makes it not even illegal to have a pirate decoder for TV reception.

The only things is that by listening you have truth of silence.
For example, if you hear your best friends wife having phonesex with her lover you can not tell your friend, or if the neighbour commints suicide you cant tell your neighbours you knew because you heard it on a scanner.
If you do, you may go to prison for up to 6 months.

Regarding listening in to area 51.
Walkie Talkies go further then 2 miles. It depends on locations. Remember, radiowaves always go to the horizon (at least). So, if you get up in those mountains talked about, use a good scanner that covers all frequencies, use a directional antenna towards area 51, connect your scanner to you laptop and runs one of them nifty decoder softwares you can freely download at one of those sites where scanner/decoder people hang out you will get to listen.
Of cource, you may only hear those. "section 4 clear" calls.

Yeah you wouldnt hear much more then "section 3 clear, going to section 1, over." because honestly, who in there right mind would say anything over the radio like this:

"This is section 2, we have a problem. The aliens got into section 3's kegger party and well, they're all just piss drunk right now. They got their probes out and they're just waving it around and singing together. We're gonna need some saucers to come pick them up because we really shouldn't let them fly home. I mean we did before in '50 and, well I think the whole world knew the outcome. And we can really only say its swamp gas a couple more times before people start wondering why swamp gas is in New Mexico, over."

Nah, I think that the radios would actually work since I watched a TV show on TLC about Area 51. A group went around the perimeter and found tracking devices implanted in the ground everywhere around a few hundred mile radius. Basically, the whole perimeter was implnated with devices used for tracking motion on the ground. Anyone who walks onto one or walks closeby will be heavily watched in that desert. That's basiccally the reason shy they have their operations there.

I think they have some kind of odd ball frequency, either that or they have a way of keeping the frequency iside the restricted areas.
