A new branch of espionage gives Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld more control over intelligence gathering activity outside of our national borders. The Strategic Support Branch was created in response to Rumsfelds dissatisfaction with his almost complete dependence on the CIA. The new branch was designed to operate under the Secretary's "direct control."

The Pentagon, expanding into the CIA's historic bailiwick, has created a new espionage arm and is reinterpreting U.S. law to give Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld broad authority over clandestine operations abroad, according to interviews with participants and documents obtained by The Washington Post.

The previously undisclosed organization, called the Strategic Support Branch, arose from Rumsfeld's written order to end his "near total dependence on CIA" for what is known as human intelligence. Designed to operate without detection and under the defense secretary's direct control, the Strategic Support Branch deploys small teams of case officers, linguists, interrogators and technical specialists alongside newly empowered special operations forces.

There are some who view Rumsfeld as the one to be held responsible for the misrepresentations and failures regarding the war in Iraq. To reward his dubious record by giving him more control is astonishing, in my opinion. There are some who view Rumsfeld as responsible for the Iraqi Abuse Crisis. He now has more authority in our representative action overseas. In light of his record is it really wise to issue out more authority and control to this post?

When I saw that in the news I was completely surprised he actually wants to eradicate in my views the CIA and create his own secret police and spies.

That man after all the dirt that is on him still wants more power in the government.

It makes you wonder as who are the ones running the show in the US.

Its dirty, nasty and corrupted.

My thoughts as well. This is a way to forge and selectively choose intelligence while getting around the FBI and CIA. This is similar to Feith's Office of Special Plans set up in the Pentagon that poured over old Iraqi intelligence at Cheney's behest to come up with a story that would convince the UN to let them attack Iraq.

Ah, so Himmler's ... oops I mean Rumsfeld's plan marches on. Wonder when he starts wearing his black uniform and luger?

They are now saying that this branch was responsible for the arrest of Saddamn......I don't think that's relevant though. The relevant aspect is the secrecy regarding an operation that has existed and made international decisions that have shaped world affairs. Is the world better off with these secrets? Well, if this intelligence service helped determine the WMD existence in Iraq, than I would have to say no.

It's already happening people. How many humans are going to shine this information in favor of consumer products and popular entertainment? The vast majority of our population not only doesn't make itself aware of these things but doesn't care, because they are convoluted with religious/social/consumer morals. That does not bode well for our future, IMO.
